We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa LeJune and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marissa, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Working to create a business structure that benefited the season of life my daughter was in. All credit goes to the father of my daughter who helped me understand how important thinking about my daughters development and health would be affected based on how my day was structure. It took me a season or too for it to sink in but once it did I was able to scale in a way that benefited our family. For example, when I first started I originally offered dog walking. At the time of dog walking my daughter was a newborn so it worked well because she was strapped in her carry on my chest and we would just visit clients homes and walk their dogs. Once she got old enough to start walking, is when I pivot my business away from dog walking and created a in-home structured daycare. Instead of driving to clients homes all day, now my clients are able to bring their dogs to my home to be cared for until after work. This was a much healthier daily schedule for my daughter and it allowed me to still provide the personalized care to my clients and their dogs. Creating a business that worked for the lifestyle my family and I desired early in business was one of the best decisions I was am grateful to have made.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the owner of Tail Swaggers. We are a luxury pet care company that offers structured daycare, boarding and dog training. The one thing that sets Tail Swaggers apart is that we focus on the quality of care your dog receives over the quantity of dogs we have. We care about you and your dog and how we can help in the best way possible. You as the owner matter just much as your dog. I find a lot of dog companies forget that and that is something I focus on to make sure you (as the owner) feel seen and appreciated. I think that would tie into a lesson I have learned overtime. How we treat people really does matter. I never want someone to join our community and feel like that aren’t appreciated.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had someone visiting Fort Worth I would probably just take them to trinity trails. We’d walk or bike while viewing the scenery and then stop at one of the restaurants along the trail to eat. I love the Clearfork area so I know one place we would definitely stop is Joy Macarons!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A huge and well deserved shoutout goes to the father of my daughter who also serves as my business coach. From the beginning he encouraged me to purse my dog business. He saw greatness in me and the services I was providing long before I did. He was the one person that has been consistently in my corner helping me develop skills in sales, business strategy and continued to build up my confidence to help my business succeed. Thank you so much Joe Winters Jr. Your support and business coaching through each season of my business has meant the world!
