We had the good fortune of connecting with Marielena Resendiz Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marielena, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
One of the best lessons that my business and career has taught me is to be present and available. To be willing to spend the time and effort to see my projects through and to build long lasting working relationships.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

As a professional in the film industry I am the Director of Operations for Datalus Pictures LLC., as well as one of our film Producers. I’ve used my years of experience to also spend time as a mentor to help guide young people who want to learn film production, and how to become a producer.

When I started mentoring it was hard to come up with ideas on how to establish myself as a mentor. But I quickly learned that the best way to make this happen is to put yourself out there. Everyone is scared to ask questions because they are afraid to get ridiculed or laughed at.

I’ve used this insight at Datalus Pictures where I strive to make our company a place of honesty and open communication. Where everyone has a say, and our projects are in fact true collaborations. After all, everyone has talents that others might not have. So, finding how to utilize those talents and put people in the best situation for success not only helps us, but it helps them as well.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are a lot of places I would love to show them but a week won’t be enough time. As a movie lover I would try to show them movies in the park at Klyde Warren park, or take them to Texas Theater in Oak Cliff. Then add an evening at the Reunion Tower for dinner, drinks and to see the Dallas Skyline. Given that this is the Holiday season I think a trip to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden should be on the itinerary. Then we’ll wrap things up with a trip to Denton, give them a little small town vibe at my favorite eateries and bars such as the Chestnut Tree, Cartwrights, Eastside Bar, The Drafthouse bar and La Milpa Mexican restaurant.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

There are several women who have molded me into who I am. My mother Felipa of course and my sister Rosalva come first and foremost to mind. Growing up they always made sure that I knew I had a voice and choice, something that I teach my daughters today.

In the past decade I’ve met amazing new colleagues who have encouraged me to trust my instincts as a professional and as a mentor. One such person was Lindsey Fields who hired me to be a mentor for incoming freshmen at UNT. She understood that my long hours and dedication would make a difference with incoming students and she was always supportive when I asked for additional funding for the program. Sadly, Lindsey passed away a year ago, but her inspiration and dedication to mentorship live on in me, and I’m blessed to have known her and be guided by her.
