We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Loredo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It didn’t really start as a business. We wanted to celebrate our daughter and I have always liked baking, cooking or really anything DIY that gets my creative juices going! So I watched some tutorials, and gave it a shot. From there some friends and family trusted me to make cakes for their celebrations. It was a creative outlet and learning new techniques, recipes and seeing my work be part of a special day made me so excited.
With practice and trial and error I became more confident in myself and in my work and with some reassurance from my fiancé I started posting my work online. Its been quite a journey so far, and I am excited for what’s to come.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Shagi’s Cakes is a home-based business, and very much still in the beginning stages of its journey. I am still growing and learning with every cake and dessert that I make. My goal is to have a beautiful design that is also delicious!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Morning coffee at Avoca Coffee Roasters is amazing, plus the vibe there is everything. There are so many places to check out in downtown Fort Worth. A Walk downtown alone is such a great experience. Head to Sundance square and make sure to grab a Steel City Pops from the cart that is usually out there. If you have kids you HAVE to check out the Dream Park, and walk the Trinity trails!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to my friends and family that encouraged me in the beginning when my cakes definitely looked like beginner cakes. My parents also have been such a big part of it, believing so much in me that they have surprised me countless times with gifted equipment for my business. I was definitely making buttercream with a handheld mixer for quite some time. My fiancé has been the BIGGEST supporter of all, Without a doubt i would not be doing this if he wasn’t there every day encouraging me, helping and making those late night runs for ingredients without a complaint!
