We had the good fortune of connecting with Marguerite Adzick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marguerite, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Prior to starting Addison Bay, I was a college athlete and working in the fashion industry for 7 years. Living in Center City Philadelphia, I noticed women wearing leggings beyond the gym and I knew there was opportunity in the market for polished yet comfortable activewear. It became clear to me that girls on the go needed pieces that could take them from 7am to 7pm – enter Addison Bay. At 6 months pregnant, I resigned from my job, put together a business plan and launched the company. The mission was to make it easier to get dressed every day by offering the modern wardrobe for the modern woman. Fast forward five years, we have expanded our assortment based on our consumers active lifestyle, opened two stores, been carried by major retailers, and rapidly grown our ecommerce business.
What should our readers know about your business?
Starting a business is signing up to be on a rollercoaster with the highest highs and the lowest lows. We have navigated the lows by being solution oriented – we define the word scrappy. We love a good challenge and the opportunity to achieve big things.
At the end of the day, I’m most proud to be a role model to my 4 kids and hopefully inspire them to go for it in their own lives. Balancing being a CEO and a mother is very challenging – I hope that leading by example will make it all worth it and my kids will, in turn, be proud of me someday.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Major shoutouts to my incredible teams at work and at home! I couldn’t have built this business without my hardworking, optimistic and growing team at Addison Bay – it is the most incredible group of smart and solution oriented women. Equally as important, I wouldn’t be able to build the company without my supportive team at home – my husband, our fabulous nanny and my parents & siblings. They all keep the wheels in motion and are the reason that I am able to be present and focused at work during the day. Without either of my ‘teams,’ I would never have been able to build the company to where it stands today – and we have so much further to go!
