We had the good fortune of connecting with Margaret Apostol and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Margaret, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food,” says the proverb. Hippocrates was a Greek physician who lived in the 4th century BC.
Throughout my medical career, this remark rang true with me and served as a reminder of what was lacking in current medical methods.
It’s something I try to live by every day, and it serves as a reminder of the healing power of food.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Since I knew I wanted to be a doctor, I’ve been interested in integrative and functional medicine. Throughout my medical education, I became increasingly aware of modern medicine’s inability to focus on health, wellness, and disease prevention. If you require a prescription for a specific medical ailment, you will have no trouble finding one; however, if you want lifestyle and nutrition advice, you will not be able to find a physician who has the time or training to provide it.
It was critical to me that we establish a medical practice that spends quality time with their patients and discusses concerns such as sleep, stress, hormones, gut health, and other topics. Non-traditional health care professionals are currently offering integrative and functional medicine. I am immensely proud of my capacity as a physician to bridge the gap between modern medicine and a holistic approach. Even if we try to treat our health holistically, pathology still exists, and I find that my patients appreciate the fact that I may prescribe medicine if it is absolutely necessary.
It was not easy to establish a functional medical practice. To begin with, physicians do not receive any business training in medical school, so most of the startup process was unfamiliar to me. We also quickly realized that insurance companies do not consider what we do to be standard of care, so we had to abandon the traditional approach in favor of a fee-for-service model. We learned a lot along the way and made improvements based on what we discovered. We discovered immediately what worked and what didn’t. I believe our business strategy is continually changing to match the needs of our patients and the services we provide.
What I want people to know about our brand and story is that my staff and I put our whole hearts and souls into it. I want individuals to know that our office is a welcoming environment where they may feel safe and that their health concerns are addressed seriously. We pay attention to our patients and take pleasure in our capacity to contact with them swiftly, even after hours, via our portal system. We are extremely proud of the fact that the staff and I know every single patient by name. With our patients, we value honesty and open communication. We’re as genuine as they come, and I hope people recognize that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Because I’ve only been in Texas for three years, I haven’t been able to go as far as I’d want. I enjoy visiting Dallas’ downtown area. I grew up in New York City, and visiting Dallas brings back those memories. I’d take them to Reunion Tower first so they could enjoy a 360-degree perspective of the city. Ziziki’s, a Greek restaurant in Highland Park, is one of my favorite places to eat. It’s the only place I’m aware of that offers gluten-free pita bread! As someone who enjoys the arts and sciences, I would accompany my friend to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science.
We would definitely attend any street or food fairs that were held.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I don’t think I would be where I am without Jamie Langston, a registered nurse who works with LifeSeasons nutraceuticals. She was a key figure in establishing this practice and has served as a fantastic professional and personal mentor to me.
