We had the good fortune of connecting with Madison Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madison, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor is doing what I love. It doesn’t feel like work because I’m passionate about inspiring others to be the best version of themselves. When growing up I struggled with eczema and was afraid to show my arms and legs because of scaring and fear of ridicule. I quickly learned that I cannot worry about what people may say or think about me, and I have to focus on God and my goals. I have carried this mindset with me my entire life. I have a friend that once told me, “Do your best, and let God do the rest.” I think of this short but impactful quote anytime I begin to doubt myself. I love inspiring others and motivating them to be the best version of themselves and to truly understand their worth. Having short- and long-term goals and keeping a daily planner has been instrumental. I have an extremely busy schedule, but I do make time for self-care. I was so consumed with serving others, I’d sometimes neglect myself. I had to learn the art of prioritizing and not overextending myself. Another important factor behind my success is intentions. I try to make sure that my intentions behind my decisions are always pure. I try to surround myself with people that are uplifting and bring positive energy. I think Tupac said it best in one of his interviews, “I want everyone to eat, just not at my table.”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a junior at Grambling State
University. My major is Mass Communications with a broadcasting concentration, and I aspire to be a news anchor. I am currently Miss Cover Girl which has given me a larger platform to share my passion of using words to inspire and motivate others. I was taught from a young age that what others do and say shows who they are and how I respond shows my character. Although words can be very hurtful, I understand that the person saying them is unhappy with themselves because happy people want to see others happy. The purpose of my Empowerment through Encouragement scholarship is to give students an opportunity to share their stories of overcoming adversity. This binds us closer as an HBCU family so that other students know they are not alone in their struggles, and there is light at the end of the tunnel. I want to share lessons I’ve learned with others. I’m intentional about seeking ways to bless others. It can be something as small as a kind word. I’ve also learned that what others say about me is none of my business. In this social media world, it’s easy to get distracted by “worldly” influences. My relationship with God helps me focus on what’s truly important. As Miss Covergirl I support each calendar girl with an event for her month. We also do community service activities. We helped students move into their dorms, donated water to Jackson, Mississippi during their water crisis, donated school supplies, welcomed elementary students back to school, and more. I also cohost a radio show every Monday, Wednesday and Friday called Good Morning GramFam at the 91.5 KGRM, Grambling Radio Station. When I’m not in class, studying for test or writing a paper, I have many activities that keep me busy.
I am also a certified make-up artist. I love enhancing the natural beauty.
My story is just beginning. I’m looking forward to the many blessings with my name on it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Most of my childhood was spent in Terrell, Texas. My favorite place to go in the summer time is called Ham’s Orchard. It’s a peach orchard that’s only open about 3-4 months a year. They sell different types of fresh fruits, jams, pies, barbecue and many other foods. My favorite signature item they sell is their peach and strawberry ice cream. Those are the only two flavors, but they are mouthwatering! I love it. Another place that feels like home is my home church, Bethlehem Baptist Church in Terrell, Texas as well. I would definitely make sure to also take a trip to the Common Table is Frisco, Texas. On Saturday’s and Sunday’s, they have a ‘Hip Hop Brunch’ theme and it’s so entertaining, a great place for family and friends.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Where I am in my life right now is because of the village I’ve had surrounding me. I was surrounded by love and encouragement since birth. My parents, brother, grandparents, Godmother, Uncle, pastor, family and friends have been instrumental in my life. Since my matriculation at Grambling, I’ve been supported by the entire staff starting with President Gallot. This university truly embodies its motto of being the place where Everybody is Somebody.
