We had the good fortune of connecting with Lysette Morones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lysette, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m a born and raised Texan girl! Most my childhood I was back and forth from Dallas to Plano. My parents separated when I was a little girl. When my dad went to prison my siblings and I would go with my Tia to Dallas. We lived with my mom to go to school pretty much. Every weekend, holiday, birthday, summer etc we were with my Tia. My mom never really had time for us. She had 6 kids that she was raising on her own and always had more than one job. My mom was a single mother so she struggled a lot to take care of us. My siblings and I took care of each other. When i was with my Tia that was my only time to be a “kid”. When I was with my mom I had to grow up fast. It was more about surviving for me. I was one of those kids that went to school and lunch was my only meal, our lights were always getting cut off, no hot water, we barely had anything to eat. I remember eating spoons of peanut butter just to feel full. At one point we lived in a shelter with my mom. I give it to my mom though, she did the best she could. She always kept us together. Growing up with my mom I had family members that would always tell me I wasn’t going to be nothing. That I would drop out a young age, get pregnant and run the streets. I actually graduated at 17 and didn’t have my first child until I was 20. I was definitely treated differently than my other siblings. Thinking about my childhood motivated me to do and be better. I used my struggles and upbringing as a PUSH. I wanted to prove everyone wrong! I didn’t want to struggle anymore. I use to tell myself “I’d be damned”. We all go through things in life but it’s how we come out of it. I never let my past define me. If anything it’s the reason I go so hard. I never wanna look back and have to go through what I went through as a child. It was honestly miserable. In a way I’m thankful of my past. It’s what made me so strong. I didn’t want to be another statistic nor was I going to give anyone the ability to say “I told you”, Nope! That was not an option. Now, I look at myself and just thank god I made it. That was pure survival mode. I’ve always had a strong head. I don’t open up about my past too much but it’s what made me who I am today. It’s emotional thinking about how far I’ve came, It takes a lot of mental strength. I remember reading my very first article and crying because like damn, who would’ve thought this is where I’d be today. My family was so mean to me as a child and by family I mean my moms side. Some of the things they would tell me stuck in my head like the tune to your favorite song, it never goes away. Thankfully I turned it into motivation to grow and prosper. When I walked across the stage to grab my diploma, I wanted to yell, “F y’all”, but I always say keep it cute and classy. I want to use this platform to give young girls encouragement to keep pushing! Don’t listen to the mean, hurtful words, you are more than that! Don’t let what people think or say DEFINE YOU! You are not another statistic! Keep god close and keep it pushin!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
To all my new followers/ audience, I am a Powder Brow Artist. Also known as “Permanent makeup”. Permanent makeup can often scare potential clients because it’s on their face and it’s permanent. I always take my time to answer questions. I don’t want anyone feeling like they are a bother. Consultations are very important to have for any service. You want to educate your clients on the service they are interested in. Your style may not be for them and that’s okay! Consultations are made to help one understand if the service is what they’re looking for and if they are a good candidate. What separates me from others is I take my time with everything! I’ll never be pushy or make a potential client feel forced. Most clients are very nervous, they don’t know what to expect, what the pain level will be, etc. If my client is too nervous, the session can take a left turn really quick.
I’ve learned so much within these two years of being a Brow Artist. Saying no is one the of the best things you can do for yourself! It’s okay to reject a client because trust me, you’re saving valuable time, unneeded stress and bad business they can potentially bring. I cannot please everyone and that’s okay. I’ve learned to show my work before hand. It’s saves myself and my client wasted time. You find your groove as you go, that’s another thing I’ve learned. Go with the flow and do your research. You can never learn too much about your profession. It’s only going to get you further! With that being said I think it’s safe to say that most of us entrepreneurs started from the ground up. Your faith is definitely tested. You are literally trying to manage your personal life and run a business. Finding that balance is one hell of a ride. The fact that I preserved through all these bumps.. I’m kinda surprised. My negative thoughts can eat me alive sometimes, I pray to god for guidance and patience for sure! Keeping god close is the keyyy. I pray before I make any decision. My faith is strong and so is my passion. I seriously love what I do. I love learning new methods and techniques. I’m kind of a nerd when it comes to these classes. I will pay for a class real quick. Everyone has their own tricks, their own little razzle dazzle, I think that’s so cool. These classes only make me better! I always let people know how much knowledge I have when it comes to Brows. Some people pick up a business for the financial freedom but I do this because I really love it. Im always investing into my baby (my business). I research the best products, machines, pigments etc. I’ll read reviews and compare. I mean I wanna make sure I get what I’m paying for and my clients are getting taken care of. Even when it comes to aftercare! Again, everyone has their own methods. A lot of girls always reach out to me about classes. At this time I’m focused on mastering my art. Of course it makes me feel good but as y’all know by now, it’s never about the money. My reputation and character matter more. My morals come first. It excites me that I have girls reaching out for classes. It lets me know I’m doing something right. Also, because I’m hard on myself! I am my biggest critic. I’ve learned to give myself some grace. I hear that often from other people. It’s hard for me to let up because I want to be good at everything I do. I’m always in competition with MYSELF! My whole journey has been honestly crazy, but keeping god close, continuing to see the brighter side of things kept me going. I want to give myself props on this one. I did it and I’m still doing it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So recently started going to Texas Live in Arlington. I’ve been out there a couple of times with some friends and it’s always a vibe. It’s a bar, restaurant and arcade in one. They have a couple of different restaurants. The best part is the huge TV screens. If you’re a sports person, this is definitely the place to go. The have a DJ playing after the games are over and your there just taking shots and vibing to the music. You can go outside for a different scenery. I mean you can have so much fun over there.. On the second floor there is an arcade area. It’s pretty cool. I really love it. Everyone’s having a good time. You’ll see people dancing in a groups sometimes. Definitely a place to hang out, have fun and let lose.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I really want to thank two girls specifically. When I left the salon I was originally working at I was kinda lost. I reached out to a well known influencer and Salon Owner named Flo (Florina). It was really to ask a question about chair rentals because I didn’t have anywhere to work after I left the salon. We started talking and in a 30 minute phone call she helped me come up with my name and really put me on game. By that I mean she told me what I needed to do next. I was nervous cause I just got into brows and at that time and I didn’t wanna lose my touch. She gave me a pep talk, advice about my work, how to take pics, content etc. I mean like damn, Flo gave me the JUICE all in 30 minutes. I remember taking notes on my phone during our call like shit she droppin gems lol! In any industry it’s so catty and cut throat. It’s rare when you get help from others that are actually big and have a platform. It’s hard to find genuine people that wanna help you succeed. This is my second year doing brows and I’ve came across more catty, rude girls than supportive ones and that’s sad! It sucks to say that but it’s the truth. Not everyone wants to see you win and I will FOREVER be thankful for that 30 minute conversation. Shoutout to Flo, thank you girl! Another lady I’d like to shoutout is Crystal! She’s another Brow Artist. We had never spoke before but I admired her and her work so much. I’m a huge supporter and I love her techniques. I had met her through social media and I just felt the need to reach out to her for advice. We eventually got on the phone and man she was the sweetest! She also put me on game. Told me what I needed, how to go about doing things, what to expect etc. Like I’ve mentioned before, being an entrepreneur is a struggle sometimes. We don’t always have the answers or know what to do to get started. Most people charge you for conversations like this! So for these two ladies to really give me this jump start, it was such a relief! Hugeeeee shoutout to them! They really eased my mind so much. We need more ladies like this. If you ladies are reading this, I love y’all and THANK YOU!
