We had the good fortune of connecting with Luiza Carvalho and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Luiza, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I could walk, I have been painting and drawing. There is an old video of me painting in our backyard, which I think I already knew at two I would live a creative life. For a career, I wanted to do something tangible but also artistc. When my parents hired an architect to remodel our home, I saw her perspective rendering of our kitchen and I knew immediately I wanted to be an interior designer. As much as I love working with clients and making their dreams a reality, I love to be able to paint on the side and execute my creative vision. I think it is the perfect balance to have one side with boundaries and rules to work within and the other to completely have free reign.

Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I believe I have a different outlook on art with an interior design background in comparison to classically trained artists. I can imagine my paintings as if it is a materials palette. I ask myself the following questions: Does this painting have complimentary textures? How does the overall color palette look? And am I highlighting what I want the viewer to look at first? I created my art account on Instagram to hold myself accountable and to keep painting. It is a way to look back over time and see my improvement. As time went by, it became a way of sharing my art with people and eventually creating a brand for myself. At first, it felt hard to share my art since it is so personal to me, but now I feel it is a way I can connect with others and network.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever I have a friend visit, I always take them to the most Dallas-like places I can think of. I enjoy walking around Deep Ellum; there are so many things to do and places to eat you can never be bored! My absolute favorite place is Ruins, which has the best fries in Dallas. I love taking friends to DMA and the Nasher to see the newest exhibits. On a Sunday we can go to the farmer’s market for some great food and go shopping.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout to my Aunt Denise, who has been my mentor/teacher since 2020. She is an art teacher in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and I saw she was offering art classes online due to the lockdown. I reached out thinking this was a great opportunity to connect with family, practice my Portuguese, and hone my art skills. Although we have gone through some challenges in the past two years, I find this to be one of the great positive things in my life.
