We had the good fortune of connecting with LuAnn Daniel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LuAnn, what inspires you?
It was the amazing strength and unwavering faith of a dear friend during her breast cancer journey that inspired me to start Women Rock in 2010. Still today, it is the true inner strength of the women we serve that inspire me to continue this path even during the most diffucult times.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After working as a radiology aid my junior year of high school, I knew that radiology was the career path I wanted to pursue. I’ve always taken care of others, and being in the medical field allowed me to take care of people on a daily basis. I worked my way up the ranks, and continued to add specialty areas to my license. The mammography field turned out to be my passion. The place where I felt I was really making a difference. It was this passion, and losing my friend to breast cancer that ignited a fire in me to make a difference. I also attribute my ability to help others through cancer from taking care of my Dad during his short journey with colon cancer. It’s not easy work, but it is always worth it! It was one of the best decisions I have ever made!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This question is hard for me. I don’t get a lot of free time. We are a small organization, so I wear a lot of hats. The work is never ending. Those that know me, know that I am very seldom not in work mode, even when on vacation. When I do have free time, I am more apt to take a group of breast cancer survivors on a weekend retreat for relaxation, fun and sisterhood.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many reasons that our organization has been successful. In the beginning, it was a family affair. Without the help of my family, I wouldn’t have had the courage to step out of my comfort zone. Starting any business from the ground up takes a lot of time and commitment. It’s not like I could quit my full time job, so my family was truly what made the wheels turn to help me realize my dream. My husband has been steadfast in his support of me, and I have always been able to rely on him to help me do anything. On those hardest days, when it feels like I can’t take another step, it is remembering the women we have lost that keeps pushing me forward.
