We had the good fortune of connecting with Lori Phan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lori, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My husband bought me a Cricut and heat press with all the trimmings in Januaury of 2019. We threw around the notion of starting a modest home business so I could be close to home and school for our six children. My husband died in July that same year. My girls and I decided to move forward with the business and started on August 31, 2019.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SoPhancy is a girl-owned business of five sisters – the SoPhancyGirls, their mom and their mom’s best friend. Although being girl-led does not set us apart, that along with our mission does. The SoPhancy mission is to spread the word. What word – well that depends on the day. But we want to make sure we are always sharing words that make people smile, whether they be inspirational words, sarcastic words, and in some cases – just plain silly words. SoPhancy intends to touch the world and in doing so, make it a better, happier place.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The SoPhancyGirls stay pretty busy going to school, running their own business and various extra-curriculars. Any friend who comes to visit will certainly be along for a crazy ride!

Any friend worth calling a friend will want to see the SoPhancyGirls under the Tuesday/Friday Night Lights cheering “AHMO” or “Patriot Pride” in the Wylie Stadium! Two of the SoPhancyGirls, Catherine and Elleandra, make regular half time appearances on their schools’ Dance Teams – the Wylie Pacesetters and Cooper Sparklers.

On top of her crazy course load (including AP and Dual Credit classes), future surgeon and oldest SoPhancyGirl Siona is generally busy with multiple school programs. She can be found all over the state during the year in competitions ranging from robotics to archery and everything in between.

There is no need to leave the fabulous city of Wylie for extra-curriculars. Puppy, the youngest of the SoPhancyGirls and resident gymnast, gets her tumbling on weekly at Wylie Elite! Friends also regularly come out to see Samantha at Plano Sports Authority in Wylie playing recreational basketball with the U8 Shooting Stars!

All the SoPhancyGirls are active in their schools. Each of the three teenagers serve on the PTA/PTSA Board for her school. Frequent after-school activities include not only club and organization practices but the girls volunteering their time to add a little something “extra” to an already fabulous Wylie ISD.

When it comes to eating, choosing a location is no small task. The SoPhancyGirls have been loyal patrons of Bistro B’s for almost two decades and have served their infamous egg rolls for family functions and parties for just as long. Catherine’s upcoming Sweet 16 party, hosted at Wylie Recreation Center, is no exception. Local business owner and friend Mac Magalindon will be providing exceptional and unique barbecue from CrackBrisket, We Texans take our barbecue seriously!

The SoPhancyGirls have great smiles engineered by Hardik T Kapadia of SmileBrite Orthodontics. I’m not sure if people regularly give shoutouts to their orthodontists, but Dr. K certainly deserves it! He has created a welcoming atmosphere of fun from the frequently changing decor in the office to the bright and cheery demeanor of every staff member.

There is always something fun and family-friendly going on in the area. You will see the SoPhancyGirls at the Asian American Culture Festival in Richardson later this month and the 13th Annual DFW Dragonboat Festival in Irving in October!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Kien Chi Phan is the reason SoPhancy exists today. It was his belief in the talent of his daughters and the drive of his wife AND his willingness to support the family with a 9-5 that even made the dream possible. It was his encouragement and love that boosted our confidence to move forward with the business dream, even though he was no longer with us.
