We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisha Hackney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisha, what role has risk played in your life or career?
In the past, I would often say that it was important to take risks, but when it came time to act on it, my fear of failing would cause me to play small. As I’ve grown as a woman and an artist, I realize that having the courage and faith to step out of your comfort zone is where all of the magic is. I now see taking a risk as a chance to go deeper in learning about yourself. As an actor, the times that I have taken risks have led to the biggest creative payoffs. It’s that moment when you do a scene and you surprise yourself. You think…..”where did that come from?” It’s so rewarding because you know that you are in the flow. You aren’t overthinking or overanalyzing, you are simply allowing yourself to be an instrument for the character to live truthfully.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a professional actor, I have learned that this career path is an ebb and flow. There will be some auditions that you book and some that you won’t. I’m proud that I have developed a mindset that is more focused on perfecting my craft, rather than booking the job. Tim Phillips said, “audition for your career, not for the job.” I’m excited to see what new characters I will get to explore next. When I’m asked what sets me apart, I always think about how there is only one copy of me on this entire planet. My experiences, points of view, and quirks all allow me to approach every script in a way that can’t be replicated by anyone else. I think it is very important for every person to know that they are enough. That is perhaps the biggest lesson I have learned thus far.
What has helped me get to where I am today has been a combination of God’s grace, my support system, determination, and the belief that I have in myself. This path has not been easy, but there is something in me that just won’t allow me to quit. I’m a small-town girl who doesn’t come from a privileged background. If I can do it, so can you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Day 1 – I would tell my friend to spend the morning getting some rest. I would then arrange for her to meet me at Kitchen & Kocktails in Dallas for brunch. Next, I would take her to the Van Gogh Exhibit followed by Yardbird Table & Bar. Afterwards we would just go for a walk in the area.
Day 2 – Walk & light exercise to enjoy scenery at Maragaret Hunt Hill Bridge, breakfast at Snooze, an AM Eatery, and a spa day at Hiatus & Retreat. Later that evening, we would rest and then get ready for an evening out at Drakes for some fun.
Day 3 – After breakfast at Yolk, we would go to Painting with a Twist for a sip and paint class, followed by lunch at Petra and the Beast. We would then do a little bit of shopping and go to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra to see a performance.
Day 4 – I would cook breakfast at my place, then we would go enjoy the day at the Dallas Botanical Garden, lunch at Mercat Bistro, an evening at TopGolf, and end the night at the movies.
Day 5 – We would start the day off visiting the African American musuem, then Reunion Tower, lunch at CBD Provisions, after taking a little time to lounge and relax, we would then go for a boat ride with the Spirit of Dallas.
Day 6 – Depending on the time of year, we would catch a Dallas Mavericks or Cowboy game and I would treat her to a nice fancy dinner at Nick & Sam’s.
Day 7 – Help them pack and get to the airport/on the road on time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mom, family, mentors, friends, my tribe of supporters that have been following my career, and my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. They say that it takes a village to raise a child. I believe the same can be said for the life of an artist. There can be a lot of uncertainty on this path. When you have a strong support system, it encourages you to stay in the race. Thank you to every person who has played a role in my journey. I love you guys!!!
