We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Hammett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I was in the corporate retail sector I averaged 60-80 hour work weeks, depending on the time of the year. Towards the end of my retail career I was consistently working 80 hour weeks. My life was completely out of balance. When I wasn’t working, I was thinking about work. I was so stressed out that I couldn’t sleep. I was 65 pounds overweight and suffered from chronic migraines and digestive issues. My marriage was rocky. My life revolved around work. I was exhausted, depressed, and burned out.
Upon leaving the corporate sector I started my personal wellness journey and lost the weight. I went through a lot of self development and reflection, recognizing there is so much more to life than work.
Since becoming a coach, I’ve made it a point to time block regular self-care, whether it’s going for a walk, taking a quick break, or scheduling time with a friend. When I take the time to properly care for myself, I’m more productive, healthier, and happier.
I share my self-care strategy with my clients, stressing, that it’s impossible to live a perfectly balanced life at all times. However, it is possible to have a mostly balanced life. Our health and wellbeing depends upon it.
What should our readers know about your business?
In 2005, after a 26 year career in the corporate retail sector, I reached burnout. This led to weight gain, depression, exhaustion, and other health problems. In a moment of desperation, I left a long-term career without a strategy for replacing my high salary, which caused significant financial hardship for many years.
After a transformational health and wellness journey, where I lost 65 pounds and spent 11 years as a wellness coach, I started my life coaching practice, with Positive Intelligence as the foundation. I help executives and high performing business owners manage stress, prevent burnout, get healthy, improve their communication and relationships, transition through toxic work environments, and live a mostly balanced life.
What I have learned over the past 18 years is that mindset has everything to do with our health and wellbeing and how we show up in life. We may have the skills to be successful, but if our mindset is not in alignment with our vision, goals, and objectives, we will never be happy, healthy, and successful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in historic McKinney, Texas. We are within walking distance of the downtown square. Some of our favorite restaurants include, Urban Grill & Wine Bar, Hugs Cafe, Cadillac Pizza, and Patina Green Home and Market. Favorite networking and coffee hangouts include Layered and Filtered. When the weather is nice, we love hanging out at The Yard.
Taking long walks in our neighborhood and around Towne Lake Recreation Center are favorite pastimes.
We love our church community at First United Methodist Church in downtown McKinney. My husband sings in the choir and I greet most Sundays.
I’m very involved in the McKinney Chamber of Commerce, where I serve as a board member. I attend our weekly networking meeting at Gather, in downtown McKinney. It’s the best place to be on a Wednesday morning. Great energy and a fun atmosphere with quality small business owners.
When friends come to visit, we take long walks in our neighborhood, dine in local restaurants, and shop at our unique boutiques on the downtown square.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My weight loss and coaching journey with Weight Watchers has made a tremendous impact on my life. WW helped me to develop a healthy relationship with food and create sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. Serving as a WW Coach for 11 years inspired and encouraged me to start my own coaching business in 2020.
In April 2022 I was introduced to Positive Intelligence mental fitness. This program has changed my life and the lives of my clients. I learned first hand how my thought patterns have impacted my life in dysfunctional ways. I’ve learned how to manage stress and other negative emotions in the moment, improving my productivity, mental clarity, communication with others, and my health and wellbeing. I now teach these principles to clients, transforming their lives for the better.
My improved mental and physical health has led me to publish a best selling book, From Burnout to Best Life, and to establish a successful motivational speaking career, starting with my TEDx McKinney Talk.
I can truly say that I am living my best life.
