We had the good fortune of connecting with Linda Bonner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Linda, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I am the owner and creator at Linda Bonner Studios. I create distinctive, handcrafted note cards and gifts for businesses and individuals to help them connect and leave a lasting impression.
I have been an entrepreneur for over 20 years and have had business ranging from scrapbooking to sewing and many things in between. My current business developed based on prior work experience, hobbies I’ve enjoyed over the years, and the search for my creative calling. I’ve had some wonderful experiences working for other business but have always felt my creative yearning.
As a child and young adult my mom, sisters and I always had a hobby or ongoing creative project. My mom is a painter and crafter and encouraged us to explore our creative side.
I was introduced to Creative Memories in the late 1990’s and fell in love with the process of documenting our family history by combining photos with paper, embellishments and handwritten stories. I had the opportunity to share this style of scrapbooking with 100’s of people over my 6 year journey as a consultant. This was the beginning of my love of all things paper.
During that time I also started a sewing business where I created hooded towels for children. That business evolved many times and in 2020 I teamed up with my sister to start Inspired Things Studio. She has taken the lead on this business venture so I can concentrate on Linda Bonner Studios. She creates beautiful handmade kimono-style robes, aprons, and other clothing and accessories for women.
Another important step in the process behind Linda Bonner Studios was learning about Art-O-Mat (r). The museum where I work got one and I was intrigued. What once was a cigarette machine has been turned into an art dispensing machine with original handcrafted art from over 400 artists around the world. I submitted my first prototype in 2018 and am now a proud member of the Art-O-Mat family. I create and sell 5 miniature art products and my art has travelled around the world.
I discovered my love of paper again by creating miniature (2″ x 3″) mixed media art. One of my earliest projects is called “Petite Notes”, miniature hand designed note cards with tiny envelopes. As I began to share these with others I started getting requests for full-size greeting cards. And Linda Bonner Studios was born.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Prior to 2017 I would never have use the term “artist” to describe myself. The priorities of raising children, getting an education and having a steady job were enough at that time. When my children became independent I started asking the questions “what do I really want to do”.
I knew I wanted to work part time and it had to be fun with opportunities to engage with other people. Imagine my delight when I discovered a job that fit my criteria. I still wanted to be creative but also wanted to be practical. My current job gives me the flexibility I need. Since I started creating art and handcrafted cards, I’m certain that this is what I’m meant to do.
My handcrafted note cards are individually designed and assembled. Everything is created by hand one card at a time. The detail and layering sets my cards apart. Unlike other artistic cards I don’t use photographs but select complimentary elements to create something unique and distinctive.
The other benefit I offer is that I’m able to create fully custom note cards for both business and individuals that reflect their personal style. I don’t subscribe to the idea that one size fits all. I want my customers to give a card that they would like to receive and be proud to give.
People ask me what kinds of cards I make. My answer is “what do you need?”. If it’s a holiday, birthday, special moment, thank you, congratulations or other style, I will work with you on color, design, message and embellishment to create the ideal design. I welcome custom orders and provide 3 prototypes for clients to pick from after we’ve had a planning meeting.
In addition to handcrafted cards I also make miniature art. All of my art is a 2″ x 3″ and is sold around the world through Art-O-Mat (see www.artmat.org). Most people can’t imagine producing this tiny art but it is my passion. My art products include paper, fabric, embellishments and ribbon. My first project was called “Tiny Dresses”, inspired by a art challenge where I used ties to create a 10 x 14 ballgown! These dresses have a fabric skirt, a paper bodice and a bow for a belt.
My other art projects include “Petite Notes”, miniature note cards and envelopes, “Birds of Encouragement, hand cut birds on a fabric background with a positive statement, and “Artful Cottages”, miniature houses made from torn paper. I simply love the process of selecting materials, coordinating colors and elements and assembling this tiny treasures.
One of the big lessons I’ve learned from creating miniature art is patience. Just because the art is small doesn’t mean the process is fast. Each project has multiple layers and I love watching the final image appear.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The downtown McKinney cultural district is filled with history and is the perfect destination for a weekend visit. From the 3 local museums and antique and boutique shops to the art galleries and beautiful outdoor spaces there is much to explore. The Comedy Arena and McKinney Performing Arts Center on the square offer unique entertainment .
There are many local restaurants around the downtown McKinney square including Mexican, sandwiches, luxury dining and more. The city itself also has a variety of shops, restaurants and entertainment.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I dedicate my shoutout to my mom, Irene. She shared her creative passion with us and her encouragement made a path for where I am today.
Second, I’m grateful to Art-O-Mat. Because of this opportunity I am a global working artist which has expanded into my own creative business.
Third, I want to recognize the creative community in McKinney, TX. The artists and creators are generous, fun and encouraging.
