We had the good fortune of connecting with Lexi Romero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lexi, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
How I feel about taking risk it can be good or bad. You have to give it your all and own it to the fullest. You have to see your vision and see that nothing else can take your eye of what you believe in. The roles that taking risk has played for me is picking a job/career that many wouldn’t choose. Being a professional dancer and choreographer there’s a lot of no’s you will get before you get those yes’s. For example : you can go out for 5 auditions in a day, but the risk you’re taking is maybe only getting one of those out of the five you got. Or maybe you didn’t even get any and that’s where you have to be ok with it. You have to keep pushing and taking those risk and leap of faith to know YOU CAN DO IT. I moved to a different state from my friends and family to keep pursuing my dreams to brand myself and business. If you don’t see it how can anyone else? Leaving was probably the best decision I’ve made and that was all from being committed and only see this as my life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been dancing for 20 years. I started just doing it for fun at 2 years old but there was something about dancing that made me fall in love with it. I loved the way it made me feel getting up everyday to express myself in a way I couldn’t. It gave me many different personalities and a discipline that I needed. What I’m most proud of is proving everyone wrong that said I couldn’t do this for a living. I mean I’ve got to do things many others can’t say at 24 years of age. I got to work with some of the best artist in the industry. Such as Debbie Allen, Daddy Yankee, Misty Copland, Chaka khan, and do the GRAMMYS. Let me say this journey of my professional career wasn’t easy at all and took nothing but drive and determination. The things I had to overcome was that sometimes it’s not you. In this career you’ll run into not having a massive following on social media could make or break you to get booked, not being tall enough. Maybe at the time they weren’t looking for brown skin dancers. I mean the list just goes on. Some of the lessons I learned is don’t get comfortable ever! Just because you’ve done a certain job doesn’t mean you can act a certain way. Continue to be humble regardless of what you succeed in. I wanna show the world that you can do anything you set your mind to. You don’t need validation from no one but yourself. If you have a goal or something you can’t see anything but that go for it. I’m a true example of that I didn’t wanna work a 9-5 and have someone tell me what to do. I wanted my own creative space, time off, loving what I do, and most importantly just enjoying that spreading my knowledge to others about what it takes to get there. Remember this all doesn’t happen over night and you gotta put in the work more than just talking about it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had my friends or family visiting I would definitely take the to Deep Ellum. What I love about this spot specifically is that you have everything all in one. I mean you get drinks, food, night life, and more. I feel that is a win for everyone.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wanna give a huge shoutout to my mother. Without her I wouldn’t be where I am today by putting me in dance class at such a young age. She seen my talent and kept paying for me to pursue this dream of mine. She sat long hours after working to take me for 4hrs or more 6 days a week. Another person/Mentor is Debbie Allen I mean she has seen the potential and talent in me since I was 11 yrs old. Pushing me to be destined for greatness always and saying dancers can be anything in the world if you just commit. Without her wisdom I wouldn’t be as confident to do what I love.
