We had the good fortune of connecting with Lexi Kassler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lexi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have been working in marketing — specifically on the social media side of things — for the last five years for a variety of large sustainable and social impact organizations and businesses. The thing I found most challenging was not being in a position where I could more directly work with and help clients. I like to be face to face with people and ask them questions. In a large organization, it’s not so simple. There’s also a lot of red tape between you and them and that slows processes down, making our impact as marketers and communicators feel very insignificant in the bigger picture.

So I wanted to take matters into my own hands and start a business where I knew I could deliver tangible benefits in a matter of months, not years. I had the desire to continue working in social media but I knew my strengths lay more in the writing, research, and analysis side of things rather than as a visual creator.

So in my research, I found out that there were people out there specializing in paid social and I was instantly hooked on the idea. I wanted my marketing agency to serve businesses making the world a better place who were ready to go big with their marketing and scale with ads.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Many people are quite shocked to hear my story, I think. I got my bachelors in Creative Writing and a masters in Sustainable Food Studies. I then worked at the UN Food & Agriculture Agency as a communications specialist in Rome, Italy and I had a lot of aspirations to continue in that field. That had been my dream job for a very very long time. But once I got there, the real story was quite different. I struggled to find meaning and purpose in my job as (what felt like) a very small cog in a big machine. I knew I wanted more for myself and the people out there that I knew were struggling with problems today, not problems that would be solved in five or ten years.

I think what really sets me apart from other ads managers is my transparency and my genuine belief in the greater purpose that many sustainable/positive impact businesses are trying to achieve. Yes, I started my own business for my own personal aspirations (I won’t deny that!) but I also care about the success of eco and health-conscious businesses because this is something I’m very personally passionate about, too.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh wow! This is hard because I have been a digital nomad up until now (I’m moving to Phoenix, Arizona soon!) but the longest I’ve lived in one place is Rome, Italy. So why don’t we start there? I’ve hosted friends and family in the city and based on their rave reviews, I personally think I have a great itinerary.

For a week long trip to Rome you can see almost all of the main attractions. Head to the Trastevere neighborhood where you can get the best meal of your life at Trapizzino. Most of the popular tourist attractions are in the center so you could probably see all of those in one day but the Colosseum is, without a doubt, the one thing you have to see if nothing else. Conveniently, right next to it is the Palatine Hill which is packed with ancient temples and villas.

If you like more outdoorsy stuff and/or art, take a bike ride down the Appia Antica (an ancient old road in the heart of Rome) or have a picnic in Villa Borghese where you can find the Galleria Borghese that’s packed with amazing art. If you’re more of a cocktails and apps kind of person, head to Freni e Frizioni, near Trastevere. Order a negroni or an aperol spritz, you can’t go wrong with either. For something more casual, head to the Piazza della Madonna dei Monti where you’ll find lots of locals drinking cups of beer and wine.

However, what I think draws me in most to a city or a place are its undiscovered gems. Places that I find just wandering by them and say, “Wow, that’s really cool. Why does no one know about this? Let’s go in!” It makes me feel like that place becomes a little something of my own that I don’t share with millions of other people. I mean the Trevi Fountain is cool and all but I had a glass of wine in the oldest wine bar in Rome, that’s something not many tourists can say!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Probably cliche, but my parents and my partner are both to blame (haha) for me starting my business. My parents are both entrepreneurial and so were encouraging of me starting my own business. Of course, their guidance and love over the years has also helped me come to believe in myself and my abilities.

My partner is also a big proponent of discipline, something which I didn’t fully understand until I began a real workout routine — there’s a mentality you have to adopt when you start working out that the task (whatever it is) has to be done. So you had better find a way to do it! I found that that perspective shift I experienced had leached into other parts of my brain when I first embarked on my freelancing journey. After a while, I realized, wow, I could really do this!
