Meet Lee Bolling | Salon Suites and Salon Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lee Bolling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lee, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Once i started building clientele and there were still more clients inquiring about their need for service. I saw there was a demand but not enough stylist to supply the services. I saw that there are enough clients for all of us and more ladies could share in the freedom of having their own schedule. My goal shifted to this opportunity. Providing an opportunity to consistently serve clients and get them in and out and on with their daily lives.

What should our readers know about your business?
My salon provides a niche service to people who have various forms of locks. Clients have a hard time finding salons for this service and a consistent place to go to have their locks maintained.
I started in a 150sf room serving clients on my own and then over time met likeminded people and grew to now 6-8 ladies at any given time in our salon that provide lock services to clients.
It is a very uncertain, fearful idea to start a business with no idea whether it will gain traction. It was not a simple thing as I had a family and no other income. It is definitely a faith walk to become a small business owner. You prepare as much as possible but you are opening yourself up for scrutiny and judgement, and potential failure. At the same time your are opening yourself up for exposure, financial success, and business growth. So there is risk but with that risk comes great rewards.
I would encourage everyone interested in starting a business to do thorough research, complete a business plan, and don’t be afraid to take that leap of faith. Blessing are on the other side of that leap.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have learned to ask my clients for new places to eat. Thats essentially the highlight of our time at work is discussing new places to eat and play. We essentially all can agree that the best places are those with a patio for a nice cocktail and live music. For brunch or happy hour, or a late dinner. It’s the best! I can’t name just one or two because Dallas has so many.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Sisterlocks for getting me started. This is a company out of California started by an African American woman that has created an entire hair movement. Goldman Sachs 10KSB is a small husiness improvement initiative across the US. This organization aided with my business growth by forcing me to channel all the ideas to one organized plan. Frankesha with BPolished Beauty Supply for this interview opportunity.
