We had the good fortune of connecting with Leah Shellhorse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leah, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Being an interior designer has been a dream of mine since I can remember. I have always felt that I have an eye for design and how to execute it well. As a little girl, I always wanted to help my parents decorate our home. When I was in elementary school, my dad let me “design” his office by placing artwork on the walls. I felt like a true professional! I ended up pursuing a teaching degree, but during my four years as an elementary teacher, my passion for design continued to grow. My husband and I bought our first home and began renovating it, which was the first time that I had full creative control on a space. I was so proud of the finished designs and realized that I was fully capable of helping others through the same process. I began taking on small jobs for clients until I made the decision to go full time and start my design studio, Shellhorse Interiors, LLC. I love what I do and the people I get to work with!
What should our readers know about your business?
The world around us is full of beautiful design- creation sings of a Creator! I am constantly learning that design is important in our lives. The details matter and affect how we live. This is true for the interior design of our homes. I love to create spaces that positively impact the way my clients feel, live, and interact with others. Have you ever walked into a room a felt immediately happy, calm or welcomed? Interior design is more than making a home look pretty, it is also about seeking and appreciating the beauty in the everyday. Hiring a designer takes a lot of trust, so my client process is set up so that communication is clear, collaboration is frequent, the client relationship is valued, and the finished design meets the specific needs & desires of the client.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
DFW is full of fun things to do and great food to eat! In Fort Worth, I’d recommend brunch at Press Cafe, coffee at Cherry Coffee Shop, shopping at Clearfork or University Park Village, a walk on the Trinity trails, and dinner at Maria’s Mexican Kitchen. In Dallas, I’d recommend spending a day in Bishop Arts District. I’d go to Eno’s Pizza for lunch and explore all of the cute little stores, bars, and coffee shops in the area.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The support of the Fort Worth interior design community is unmatched. I meet with several other designers about once a month, either at the Fount House Interior Showroom or at a local coffee shop, to offer advice and resources to one another. It is refreshing to have a community of small businesses supporting one another.
My husband, Clark, has been my biggest cheerleader from the very beginning when Shellhorse Interiors was just a dream. His sacrifice, support and selflessness has helped my business get to where it is today.
