We had the good fortune of connecting with Laurie Hannoush and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laurie, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
I’ve been self-employed for 13 years, and never imagined I’d grow my business to the point it’s at now. I have 3 locations so far in Canada and USA with a combined number of 35 women on my team. The vision is to grow the business to multiple, multi-national locations and to franchise Waxonomy in both USA and Canada. I’d love to see Waxonomy grow to compete with some of the bigger players in the industry and be known for its technique, price point, and become a place estheticians can call home.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I went to York University in Ontario, Canada and received my Honours Bachelor of Design. When I decided to start waxing in 2009, my parents were disappointed that I’d be giving up something I had a talent for. I didn’t disagree that it was a shame to waste creativity, but I just needed to make ends meet. Fast forward to 2016, and I discovered permanent makeup. I took my first microblading training, and became obsessed with all things related to this new industry that I had found. Since 2016, I’ve taken over 30 certifications, and have more than doubled the investment I had made into my post-secondary education. Starting off in permanent makeup was a challenge, setting yourself apart from the rest of the artists in town, figuring out how to improve my clients’ healed results, discovering new product lines to give my clients the best possible outcome, all in a very competitive industry. The biggest lesson I’ve learned, and that I can offer to new artists (or business owners in general) is to see yourself as part of a community and not competition. We can all learn from each other, and there are plenty of people out there for all of us to have a piece of the pie.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m new to Frisco and DFW — this is a great question for me to discover! I’ve been so busy setting up my business here that I haven’t found all of the great spots to take someone to show them the best of Dallas.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My esthetician, Rachelle, was the person who initially planted the seed in my mind. She worked from her home, and had clients in and out of her home-spa all day long. She’d often drop comments about how lucrative esthetics could be, and how I should leave my job in the corporate world to just work from home. When I told her my plans to wax to make ends meet, she told me where to get my certification and once completed, she mentored me on improving my skill, tips and tricks, and was the shoulder to lean on when I felt like I couldn’t get the hang of it. Second to Rachelle would be my husband, who has always been my sounding board for almost all decisions I’ve made in my business. We’re a team, even though he doesn’t get involved much in the day-to-day, but I wouldn’t have progressed as far as I have without his support.
