We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Orr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk-taking has always been an essential part of who I am, shaping both my personal journey and professional achievements. I believe that taking risks is the key to growth—it pushes you out of your comfort zone, challenges your limits, and shows you just what you’re capable of achieving.
In my personal life, I’ve embraced risks wholeheartedly. From bungee jumping to skydiving and traveling the world solo, I’ve sought experiences that not only thrill but also teach resilience, adaptability, and courage. These adventures have taught me to trust myself, face the unknown with confidence, and appreciate the rewards that come from stepping into uncharted territory.
In my career, I’ve taken the same fearless approach. I ask questions, try new things, and actively seek out opportunities to progress, even when they feel intimidating. This mindset has led to an incredibly fast trajectory in my career, allowing me to acquire a diverse skillset and grow beyond what I thought possible. Now, I’m taking the ultimate leap: channeling everything I’ve learned into starting my own business.
For me, risk is not just an occasional decision—it’s a way of life. Every leap, whether in my personal life or career, has brought me closer to discovering my full potential and achieving more than I ever imagined.
What should our readers know about your business?
At aussie glows, we pride ourselves on offering a truly unique, luxury mobile spray tan experience in Dallas. What sets us apart is not just our mobility or convenience but the high-quality, all-natural Australian products we use. Being Australian myself, I’ve infused my culture and standards into the business, creating a bespoke service that ensures every client feels confident, comfortable, and radiant.
I got to where I am today after 15 years of professional experience, including managing P&L responsibilities and leading a team of 150 people in my last corporate role. That experience gave me the foundation I needed to understand the intricacies of running a business—from strategy and operations to people management. It wasn’t an easy journey; it required long hours, unwavering dedication, and a constant drive to succeed. But it prepared me to take the leap and start aussie glows.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of authenticity. Being true to yourself resonates with everyone—whether it’s your clients, team, or mentors. I’ve also learned to persevere through the tough days. Motivation isn’t always easy to maintain, but giving yourself grace, staying positive, and being your own biggest cheerleader can make all the difference.
aussie glows is more than a spray tan service; it’s about empowering clients to feel their absolute best. We understand that getting a spray tan can feel like a vulnerable experience, which is why we focus on creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. When you choose aussie glows, you’re not just getting a sun-kissed glow—you’re getting a confidence boost that radiates from within.
Dallas deserves the best, and I’m proud to say that aussie glows is redefining what a luxury spray tan experience should be.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Dallas, we’d focus on simple pleasures that feel personal and special. Since I’m a homebody who loves good food and wine, much of our time would revolve around great meals, relaxed settings, and quality time with my 4-year-old son.
We’d definitely start with some incredible dining experiences—places like JOA for a delicious Korean BBQ or Sixty Vines for amazing wine paired with fresh, seasonal dishes. For something casual but delicious, we’d hit Mama’s Pizza or grab BBQ at Terry Black’s. And dessert is non-negotiable—I’m heading straight to Crumbl for the most delicious cookies!
For daytime activities, we’d mix in outdoor fun and family time. We’d go swimmingin our backyard, and spend an afternoon at White Rock Lake or Klyde Warren Park, where my son could run and play while we enjoy the fresh air.
The Bishop Arts District would make for a fun outing—exploring unique shops, grabbing coffee at a cozy café, and soaking in the laid-back vibe. And when we’re ready to unwind, we’d share a bottle of great wine at home while catching up.
We’d also have to go to Fort Worth Stockyards to experience the rodeo and local bars!
This mix of relaxing at home, enjoying amazing food and wine, and creating simple moments with my family would make for the perfect Dallas visit. It’s all about good company, good food, and a balance of fun and downtime.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who deserve credit and recognition in my story, but my husband, David, stands out as my biggest supporter. He’s my sounding board for every idea, challenge, and dream. He pushes me to aim higher and reminds me of my potential, even when I doubt myself. Having someone who truly believes in you and is there to cheer you on makes all the difference. And I can’t forget my son, who inspires me every day to ask questions and aim higher so I can provide an incredible life for him and so that, when he is old enough, he will be inspired to do the same.
My parents also deserve a huge shoutout. They’ve always encouraged me by reminding me that I can do anything I set my mind to. Their unwavering support and belief in me laid the foundation for the confidence and resilience I carry with me today.
Together, their love and encouragement have been my greatest assets, propelling me forward and helping me achieve more than I could have ever imagined on my own.
