We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle Breidenfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyle, why did you pursue a creative career?
Music isn’t actually my career, and I’m really glad it’s not actually. Even at the highest level it’s such a hustle, always having to be on, grinding. I just want to create. I was fortunate enough to have a band that recorded in a big studio when I was quite young and from that moment on it was all I wanted to do. Music is my full time hobby, which for me means I work at it harder than some who do it as a fulltime job. I have a lot of drive when I’m passionate about something, so creating and working on music a lot is very enjoyable for me, but I don’t have to do it, I don’t need to make anything from it and I’m only doing it because I love it and I’m so humbled to be any part of it. I don’t want anyone telling me what I’m supposed to do, how I’m supposed to sound or when I need to do anything with my music.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As Particles Collide is my solo music project that I started in 2018. I’ve done some collaborative tracks with APC but for the most part I do all things APC. I’ve always wanted to do a gazey sound with some elements of hardcore, punk mixed in, I could never quite find the right group so I started APC on my own. It’s been really cool these last few years seeing the revival of shoegaze and the whole nu-gaze scene, there’s so much killer music going on right now in that space. Not that I’ve ever been big on putting a label on my sound, I like to think I have a bit of my own sound, but it has to fit somewhere in a spectrum, unless you have a really inconsistent style which has never been my thing. I think the revival of this shoegaze is part of why APC has done so well. For me I just want to create, weather it’s from a place of happiness, anger or any emotion, I never want it to come from a place of seeking anything, praise, money, attention, success if one person hears it or ten million people hear it it’s all good, I’m doing this for me, and the success it has had has been beyond humbling and beyond what I ever imagined.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well they’re going to be a little disappointed if it’s a week seeing how I’m home body, hope they like chilling and horror flicks, lol.
There is a really awesome club called the pyramid scheme here in Grand Rapids, I’ve seen Shiner, Hum, Teenage Wrist, Propagandhi and many others there, I’d try to catch a show.
There’s an really sweet horror film and memorabilia shop called Alive Again that’s a must.
To many good local restaurants to name, what you’re in the mood for we have here.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A good friend of mine Brian George. He has been in many killer bands throughout the years Cosmonaut is one of my favorites, his current project is called Roseneath. Brian was the only musician I worked with for a long time while music was on the back burner for me. We only worked together a couple times but I learned so much from him and the few tracks we recorded kept the fire alive for me. I don’t think APC ever would have happened if I didn’t have Brian in my life.
