We had the good fortune of connecting with Kumi Hirose and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kumi, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
For me, the most important value or principle is hard work and commitment to my art because it expresses my mind and personality, which brings out positive energy.

When people communicate with others heart to heart, their hearts open up with more compassion.

Albert Einstein said: “A person’s value is measured by what person has given, not what person has gained.”

As someone said: “Don’t lie, Don’t bother others, be honest, don’t be greedy, Don’t just think about yourself.”

It’s something that everyone learned from their parents and teachers when they were children. Art contains elements of sensation, sensibility, fashion, emotion, psychology, spirituality and mentality.

It affects people’s hearts. Also, an art work is an expression of the personality and heart of the artist who created it.

Entertaining people’s hearts, encouraging people, shaking people’s hearts,
I would like to continue to create art works that give “good energy” and “good mood”.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am proud to express the crazy passion in my heart when making paintings. In addition to this crazy passion, I would like to express the world of positive energy such as “Get energized”, “Cute”, “Interesting”, “Beautiful”, “Cool”. What sets me different from others is that my work is colorful, pop and powerful.

I was lucky, it was a smooth road, except for the hardships to win the prize.
I receive the Valedictorian Award and the Collection Award of the University’s Museum for the first time at the university graduation ceremony,
And when I decided to become a painter,

I had a hard time getting up at 4am and returning from school at 11pm every day.
But I am glad that I learned that if I make an effort, the results will follow.
But, I heard that it is normal for famous cartoonists to sleep only once every 3 days.

There are many people who are having a harder time than I am.
The lesson I have learned is that you cannot win results without effort.
I want to do my best by imitating people who are having a harder time than myself.

I hope people in the world who know my work have positive feelings such as “getting well”, “cute”, “interesting”, “beautiful”, “cool”,

And I would be really glad if people in the world could get “good energy” and “good mood”.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
New York is one of the most prosperous cities in the world for art. I would like to take you to a world-famous museum or gallery.

Events are always held in museums and galleries so I think it’s a fun spot.

Also I think it’s good to go to Central Park and get in touch with nature.
Central Park also has an amusement park and a zoo, so it will be a fun and healing space where you can come in contact with nature in the big city.

Also, my painting studio is in Bushwick, and nearby is the Bushwick Collective with many great murals.

You can experience a different kind of art from museums and galleries.
I think this is also a wonderful art spot.

There are also many restaurants, cafes, bars and shops everywhere in NY.

When my best friends and family visit me, I want to take them to New York’s great art spots and Central Park.

And from that spot, I would like to take you to a nearby restaurant, cafe or bar and have a best time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of the people who inspired my life, I want to give shout out iis Akira Toriyama, a world-famous manga artist who painted Dragon Ball.

I like the comics he draws and reading them gets good energy and encouragement for me.

And I was looking into him.

He worked all night for up to 6 days.

I heard that it is normal to sleep once every 3 days.

And he said in an interview,

“If it’s good not to sleep, I don’t want to sleep!

I want to immerse myself in my hobbies without sleeping, not at work!”

It’s the same as saying “I don’t want to eat” when I’m hungry.

***A person with desire or ambition usually prioritizes work even if he/she loses sleep.

I would like to respect his spiritual theory, which prioritizes what he wants to do over desire.

I found out that the people who are active in the world that they have that much indomitable spirit and patience.

I have learned how important theory is and I respect that he makes gutsy art.

And I would be really glad if people all over the world learn more about works of art that bring “good energy” and “good mood”.

He is definitely an inspiring person not only for me but for others.

This is a shoutout to him.
