We had the good fortune of connecting with Krysta Evans-Hughey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krysta, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is LOVE. Why LOVE? Because that was the ultimate thing Jesus showed us (not trying to be all “Holy”) but in all honesty its LOVE. When you really put LOVE in what ever it is that you do nobody will ever be able to do what you do. Yes I can give you a recipe to one of my authentic dishes but you’ll just read what I wrote down and forget the major step. Some may think it’s a cliché but it really has been one of the most consistent things that I incorporate every single time I’m cooking big or small. This came from my grandmother growing up she had seven children by herself. She feed the neighborhood kids along with her own children and who ever else was hungry. The “kicker” is she was working in a cotton field and that’s how she made her money(literally pennies) but she made it happen with LOVE. Her kids didn’t go without eating or shelter. When she finally moved to Dallas from Louisiana she started selling brown bag lunches. This grew into plate lunches then eventually I was born and started “mimicking” what I saw her do. And she would always say “Kris don’t forget to LOVE your food ask God to direct you when your stirring, baking, frying etc.” Allow the love you have for God to show up in your food. A lot of times we feed more people than we profit but we still manage to be ok. My slogan will forever be “Love is always the secret ingredient” And this to me is the most important factor in my growing success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Some things about me are. I am the owner of KsKatering A catering company I started outside my very first apartment. Really selling out to family (because I have a huge family that loves to eat). While in the apartment I began to be overwhelmed with how small it was and I started feeling as if the walls were closing in on me. This was due to it being a two bedroom apartment with my husband and my two boys and another one on the way. I was still doing my plate lunches because this was a way to help my husband with bills. But then it began to be more than what we thought we could handle. So we moved out the apartment and into my mothers home. We stayed with her for three years. While there I was still doing my plate lurches and caterings. At this time I have a totally of five children while doing this. The challenge came when it was time for us to leave and find our own home. During the waiting process my husband continued to work his job but he wasn’t happy doing that he said he felt like a robot. So he eventually let his job go in order to be more efficient for his family. I maintained the catering company. We got our home. My husband got a job that he would never imagine while still continuing to grow our catering company. It’s not always easy but it is worth it. I stay consistent on my products. I continue to love what I do and love the people that so truly want me to win and succeed.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My bestie is a foodie just like me so of course we’ll be indulging in the most epic spots in the city. We would obviously have the first “snack” from KsKatering that would consist of a charcuterie board my way. Smoked Ribs, Chicken Slider Sandwiches, Fried Chicken Bites, Loaded Mashtini. Now see this is just the beginning. We have to go to True Kitchen and Kocktails for drinks. The next day we are definitely walking around Kylde Warren Park for all the different food trucks there. we have to go to the West End again to do more walking and obviously bar hoping. My bestie is not the club chick and neither am I so we are going to Main Event for bowling and all the other activities. We both have children so we have to have a date with them so Kidzania here we come. Before the trip ends we are going to the Reunion Tower. Eating, drinking, walking clearly deserves a Spa date at the Omni Hotel. That’s exactly how we will enjoy each other and the city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My granny. Lonnie Mae Bivins. She is the ultimate example of a hard worker. I used to watch her be tired from riding the bus from working at a local grocery store then getting off work to prepare dinner for her husband and us and whoever else would just stop by the house. I learned from her how to sell plate lunches. While watching her I never thought honestly that I would be the grandchild to take this and “run with it”. Well I did. And all thanks to her I started my catering company with the principles she taught me. She’ll say “all Glory goes to God”.
