We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristi Kennebrew and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristi, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It all started when I walked into my first tech job, met my team, and looked around to see there was no one that looked like me in the room. No one that looked to share the same experiences or background as me. I started to reflect on my own tech journey and how I got to where I am today. Then realizing there was a need for access. I noticed that a lot of people from my community did not have access to tech roles, recruiter contacts, or message templates. The lack of knowledge on how to use professional social media site like LinkedIn was literally holding job seekers back from financial freedom & work-life balance.
I was lucky enough to have someone take a chance on me & teach me the way, so I decided to pave the way for others. I branched out and created GetMeHiredKristi, a social media job search platform where candidates have access! They can find entry-level roles, roles where they can use their transferable skills & have a recruiter contact along with the right messaging to send. This was my way of giving back & letting my community know that I will give them all the resources they need to be successful. Hence the birth of the famous phrase “Get me hired Kristi! Okay, I got you!”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Some highlights of my career journey include recruiting top talent for big tech companies like Google & Microsoft! I had the absolute pleasure of working with some of the smartest people in the world to build strategies around finding diverse talent from non-traditional backgrounds. It was important to me that the teams I recruited for had diversity of thought when it comes to building products for the world to use.
I help candidates now land their dream jobs, but it hasn’t always been that way. I come from a very poor and underrepresented community where most aren’t expected to go to college. It wasn’t easy, but I was determined to make the best of myself, so I apply to all the scholarships I could. With hard work and dedication, I was able to receive a full ride to the University of Texas at Austin.
There were so many people that took a chance on me and guided me in the right direction so that I could have access to opportunities at big tech companies like Google & Microsoft. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is to never forget where you come from. As soon as I was able to, I started offering services to help students like myself have access to better career opportunities especially in the tech space. I want people to know that Get Me Hired Kristi is not just a name but a brand & story dedicated to giving back and changing the lives of jobseekers, one application at a time!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is the perfect question for me because I’m always the one putting together that itinerary when friends come into town! The first place they have to visit would be the AT&T discovery district. Going at night allows for all the lights to come on and give the best vibes of downtown Dallas! There is also a food court so we have to grab a sweet snack from Press Waffle Co. I would suggest adding ice cream and sprinkles on top of your waffle for the perfect blend of sweet and savory.
The next step would be reunion tower! Going to see a 360 view of Dallas Texas is a must see when friends come to visit. It’s also the perfect spot for the next Instagram photo! They recently opened a steakhouse restaurant that is a must try!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Get Me Hired Kristi would not be what it is today without the amazing job seekers! There are a few job seekers that have supported the platform since day one & still share & promote all jobs & services I post. The goal has always been to have success stories of candidates landing a new job that will allow them to have financial freedom & a great work life balance! Shoutout to job seekers for making Get Me Hired Kristi what it is today & allowing it to grow into something beneficial to the community!
