We had the good fortune of connecting with Khamphet Phommahaxay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khamphet, what do you attribute your success to?
We believe our success is tied to our passion for ice cream and the strengths we bring to our business. I rely on my culinary experience to create unique flavors with broad appeal and my wife’s design background is infused into every part of how we communicate and convey our Miruku brand and story to our community. Together, we’re able to translate our passion into a viable business. We provide high quality ice cream and unique beverages through an ever-evolving menu that adapts to changing trends and tastes. Our goal is to exceed customers’ expectations, excite their taste buds, and deliver it all with friendly service.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We were inspired by a style of ice cream we experienced in Japan that focused on fresh, organic and whole ingredients. It was our dream to open a unique soft serve ice cream and cafe, offering simple, natural ingredients and high-quality products that everyone can enjoy.
Our ice cream is different. It’s light in texture, but big on flavor and uses simple, natural ingredients. We make our ice cream in-house, every day in small batches to maintain quality high. We spent a lot of time perfecting our recipe and flavors. The unique flavor combinations are inspired by our food memories and marry eastern and western and it’s these flavors that set us apart. Our menu changes constantly so there’s always something new and interesting to tempt your taste buds every time you visit. We also have non-dairy ice-cream and drink options that are delicious.
Starting a new business is exciting, and can be full of unknowns. We felt our idea would work because we were pairing a unique approach to ice cream flavors with a perfect location in downtown McKinney. The city of McKinney has been so welcoming to Miruku and our small business neighbors. It’s played a big part in helping to promote businesses like ours through special events and social media, which helps us meet more people in the community.
Our proudest moments are when we can make people smile by just doing what we love to do. The feeling you get from seeing the joy of families spending time together while enjoying an ice cream treat is unmatched. It’s been truly gratifying to be welcomed by the McKinney community and it makes all the hard work and resources we’ve invested all worth it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Historic downtown McKinney is a true destination that offers a small town feel with diverse businesses and friendly neighbors. It’s a place to gather, stroll the squares and make unforgettable memories. Its sophisticated charm, eclectic shops, restaurants, vibrant entertainment, and arts scene.
Start by exploring the unique and charming art galleries that McKinney has to offer. After having lunch at my favorite place The Guava Tree Cuban Cafe & Cantina, be sure to take a leisurely walking tour of the many murals located all around town. You’ll be surprised how many there are!
If you love shopping, you’ll want to reserve a day to browse the diverse number of shops. Some of my favorites are McKinney Hat Company for iconic hats, Petals and Vine, Casa Benedetta for unique home decor and handcrafted jewelry. Fair and Square for global artisan goods.
Go winery hopping, catch a show at the Mckinney Performing Arts Center. Dine at some of the many restaurants, from casual to fine dining. And of course, no day is complete without a sweet treat or refreshing drink at Miruku Creamery. Relax at a spa to end your day!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A big thank you to our families and friends who believed in and supported us. We want to express our appreciation for the warm welcome from the town of McKinney and to our wonderful Miruku Creamery + Café customers for your continued support! We are truly grateful for the opportunity to bring smiles and tasty treats to everyone, and we look forward to meeting new people in the McKinney and surrounding communities.
