We had the good fortune of connecting with Keseya Bornslater and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keseya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business, and is still the same today ” Something has to disrupt your current situation enough to make do something different” and for me that was COVID-19. I was working as registered nurse case manager in the home health industry, and had been for 17 years. When the world became aware of COVID with so many uncertainties I was willing to continue to serve until I found myself going into patient’s homes that were noncompliant with staying home, and so where their family members. That was scary enough for me to do something different, which I now call it PIVOT FOR PEACE in my business. I couldn’t have made a better decision.

What should our readers know about your business?
MKB Community Living, LLC. is an unlicensed group home business in the Dallas Fort Worth area, our specialty is providing affordable housing in a shared living space to vulnerable populations such as Mental illness, Seniors who are no longer able to live alone, Veterans, Disabled, and also people whose salaries aren’t 3 times the rent to qualify for private housing. I am most proud of making an impact on this global challenge in my community it is my God given purpose to serve in this exact manner. I made a ton of mistakes in the beginning, but I didn’t let that stop me, every challenge I was met with no matter how big or small the only option was to figure it out and keep going.

Shortly after MKB Community Living, LLC was birthed I began to speak to other group home owners who weren’t doing as well some where even being threatened to close their businesses I identified that their problem was they have a business, but they do not know how to run a business, and as much as I wanted to “mind the business that pays me” as they say… once again with a purpose driven mindset I created a program for 2 reasons 1. To help people avoid costly mistakes, and provide a fast track opportunity to the finish line. 2 . To teach how to run a business on the front, and backend, I started doing this on a 1:1 basis until it became overwhelming, and recently launched The Group Home Boss Academy an educational digital program in a group setting where I teach people to not just get their group home, and clients, but also how to run their business, as business men and women… To create systems, and strategies that allows them the freedom to continue to grow and scale.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my best friend comes to Dallas for a week our itinerary would be filled with going out to brunch cause Dallas is huge on brunch. Some of my favorite places, are KISS, XOXO, Eso Mimosa, Bishop Arts District, True Kitchen Cocktail. I love Downtown Dallas the vibe, and energy is everything, my 2nd favorite hang out is all things Addison I’ve never gone to Addison and not had a good time. Of course we will have to do some shopping at my favorite mall North Park Mall. Botanical gardens is also fun place I can see us enjoying the variety of colorful flowers, as we stroll through the park and catch up on girlfriend chat.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout 2 people. First my loving husband Marcus Bornslater, he is so supportive, and is onboard with just about all of my entrepreneurial ideas, he’s also our property manager in our group home business, we call him ” The Overseer” It is an absolute delight to be on the team with him we work well together. The second person is my loving mom Annie Randle she raised me to believe that anything is possible, and that if 1 person has done it I can do it too, I’ve lived by that my whole life. She is my mentor in every aspect of life, led by example I am truly blessed to have such a loving supportive mother. I owe her the world and i’m going to give to her!
