We had the good fortune of connecting with Keri McClellan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keri, how do you think about risk?
I think taking risks go hand-in-hand with having faith. When you step out on faith you don’t know most of the process. You know, the where, the how….you just take a step to get out there. Taking that step without thinking about having the perfect resources has helped me a lot in my life and within my business. Sure, I’m not exactly where I want to be yet supplementing my income from my 9-5 job but I’m surely not where I used to be. I think it’s necessary to take risks to get out of your comfort zone in order to achieve success.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is the experience. Not only am I providing makeup application, but I want to give my clients a relaxing atmosphere that’s similar to a getaway or something you do for self-care. I want someone to sit in my chair and get their makeup done feeling like their appointment if their ‘me time’ away from all the chaos in the world. I’m not as booked and busy as I’d like to be but I got where I am today simply by putting myself out there as much as I can. I’ve also established lasting relationships with several clients. Those relationships have allowed me to be booked for makeup whenever they want to have their makeup done for any special event throughout the year. It hasn’t been easy and maintaining a business will never be easy. If there’s one thing that I’ve learned, it’s that I can never stop perfecting my craft. There’s always more opportunities to learn from others in this industry. I’ll never stop learning to be better in my makeup artistry. I want the world to know that I am amazing at what I do and that I deserve a spot at the top just like we all do. There’s enough for all of us to go around.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Deep Ellum he always been a really good spot that I’ve enjoyed going to. The atmosphere, the people, the music and the restaurants. It’s a whole vibe. For retail therapy I love going to Grapevine Mills Mall or The Galleria. If I need a massage or facial I’m absolutely going to Hand and Stone. It’s a must. Should I need my nails done I have to make my stop at Cosmo Nails in Flower Mound. I love brunch spots on the weekend like Breadwinners or Ida Claire or Jonathan’s Oak Cliff. It’s never bad to have a drink at The Daiquiri Shoppe. That’s my spot. Never disappoints. I don’t do much being a mom. My husband and I rarely get to get out.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, my mother, my siblings and some of my friends definitely deserve credit for where I am. My husband, my mom and my siblings have always encourage me to accept any job that I was afraid to. They also let me know that doing makeup for free sometimes (not all of the time) will get me more clientele in the long run. They have always pushed me when I felt like I wasn’t a good enough makeup artist for a certain opportunity that was presented to me. I will always love and appreciate them for that.
