We had the good fortune of connecting with Kennedy Raye Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kennedy Raye, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For me, the idea of having my own business was an inevitability. I come from parents who are entrepreneurs in mindset and bloodline. I always admired the work ethic that they modeled for me and the ability they had to dream.
I knew for me to have the financial and economic freedom I desire for myself, husband, and my children- taking a risk to have my own company was important. I desired my children to see that small business is important to the community and economy. I needed them to understand that no idea that they have is too small for the world because there is only one you. God created you unique and there is space for your organic ideas and thoughts.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to think of myself as a creative person to my core. I know my purpose isn’t just to be a business owner. I know that some of the power of having my own business is that I have creative freedom and expression to do what I feel. I’m most proud that I’ve been able to create this business and build it all the while having moved to 4 different countries in the process and also prioritizing being a mother to 3 children.
Getting to where I am professionally wasn’t easy and I don’t view myself as successful quite yet. I do believe I’m on my way.
Overcoming my challenges had a lot to do with my love for Jesus and finding my peace in serving Him.
I have learned that performing for others isn’t enough motivation to be long-lasting or fulfilling. You have to prioritize what you feel led to do for your reasons. I have also learned that we can underestimate our impact based on how much money or reach our company has. Thats how society has trained us to think and believe. To me, if I positively affect one person’s life and give them something to look toward for themselves in how I live, I’m successful.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend was coming into town this would be my perfect Saturday:
I would take them to LaLa Kind Cafe for some overnight chai oats and a coffee.
Then we’d take a walk on the Katy trail followed by lunch at Honor Bar.
We would then go to get massages downtown at a hotel and finish off our evening going to Uchi for dinner & a Lychee Martini.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my shout-out to my husband, Tarik. Despite how busy his career has made our family, playing professional basketball, he’s always made ample room and opportunity for my desires and ideas. He champions me every step of the way.
