We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendra Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had been working at the World Trade Center in an apparel showroom, once I had my daughter I stepped back due to the long hours. Once my daughter was older and in school, I had that itch to get back in the business. This time I was more inspired by home interiors and the coziness and comfort of being at home.
My husbands business partner is from India and he brought us a few quilts back from a recent trip. We used them everyday and took them everywhere (machine wash and dry!)
Our friends were wanting them and so we got a few more, then their friends wanted them so we got a few more….
I then decided everyone needed them!
I found a great group of girls, some I knew from my showroom days and we started having home pop up shops and the word started to get out. I then got my website up and running and started setting up more shows and wholesaling to stores. It is so fun and exciting when new opportunities are presented and you have the chance to jump on them!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
SaPeyKa (Suh-Pay-Kuh) – handmade one of a kind quilts! Each one is unique and different from the other! Making it the perfect gift or addition to any persons life!
I am truly excited to share these quilts with everyone!
They are machine wash and dry on normal cycle! They can go anywhere!
Start as a stunning and colorful decor piece in your living room, take to soccer practice, or a picnic.
Use as a textile! I have had many clients cover a headboard, make pillows, placemats, even upholstering couches and chairs! The possibilities are endless!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My girl friends were just in this weekend for a little staycation! We went to the new Thompson Hotel, Catbird, and Monarch! Such a blast and SO Dallas haha. It was nice after being so locked in to really go all out! During the day we laid by the pool and relaxed and got caught up!
However, in normal everyday life its much more relaxed, any Mexican restaurant with patio, walking around Inwood Village or Snider Plaza and enjoying being outside before all the weather gets to us!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my husband! Without his encouragement and help this would have never gotten off the ground! He was so excited and loved the idea which gave me the drive to get it done!
Also, Julie McPhail with Whatsoever Things, Kristen White with Lou Collection, Melanie Ramon with Melanie Gayle and Beverly Lueckemeyer with Bevs Jewels.
These woman have supported me from the very beginning! Such a great group of women who have created their own business and are killing it! We often get together for Pop Up Shops and give support on Social Media which is so crucial these days!
