We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendall Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendall, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
There is really no such thing as perfect balance, and everyone’s balance is different. My number 1 rule is that the company I work for values me as a person, not just an employee. Things come up and life happens, it’s the way we respond to it that makes the difference.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always wanted to work for a non-profit ever since I was a kid. However, it has NOT been easy. The non-profits I’ve worked for thus far in my career work directly with people, and people can come with challenges. Seek first to understand than to be understood. Listen and learn! Not every one person needs the same thing the same way. I’ve learned to treat everyone as an individual.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Dallas is full of so many fun things! I’d of course take them to a cute local coffee shop, maybe do some shopping in any and all of the local boutiques in Dallas, have Mendocino Farms for lunch, maybe go grab a cocktail at a local happy hour and have dinner at a local Dallas restaurant! Can you tell I love supporting local? Haha. Dallas has so many local businesses that are nowhere else.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The DEC Network, a 501c3 non-profit helping entrepreneurs start, build and grow their businesses, has made such an impact on me. Having the opportunity to work for an organization that has a passion to help people in need, with a focus on women and people of color entrepreneurs, has been so rewarding. The best part is that we get to make a real impact on DFW, and especially when someone comes up to me and says thank you, it reminds me why I love doing what I do
