We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelli Yarbrough and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelli, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my travel business was I wanted to be able to travel more and earn extra income. One of my friends who was doing well in the business suggested I join and the rest was history! I saw how the travel business was changing people’s lives and I knew I had to be a part of something that would retire me from the healthcare field. I’ve been a nurse for almost a decade and while I love the field it can be draining. My goal was to create a life that I didn’t need a vacation from and to simply be happier.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
In November 2022, I stepped out on faith and became an independent travel agent. I originally started because my goal was to make some extra money and save on my travel. So one day I reached out to my friend who was already in the business and she helped me get started. Like most, I was nervous that my business would fail, but I didn’t let that stop me. I started gaining clients my first week in business and it took off from that moment. A few months later, my mentor suggested I become a rep in the business and help other people become travel agents. At first, I didn’t feel confident to lead new people in the business because I’m an introverted person. I tend to like to remain under the radar but I knew that this was my calling. I wanted to be able to make a difference in someone else’s life like my mentor. A few months later, I helped several nurses start their travel business and I’m so happy that they trusted me to lead them to financial freedom. I think the hardest part of being an agent/rep is balancing both sides of the business. Sometimes as an entrepreneur, you have to take a step back and not let your business affect your personal life. I want the world to know that my brand, Kelli’s Travel Agency, books cruises, resorts, hotels, and excursions! I look forward to serving others and creating the vacation of their dreams.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a best friend visiting the area, I would show them all of my favorite spots in Dallas/Fort Worth! One place I would recommend is the Reserve in Dallas. The Reserve has game night every Friday and it’s a good place to hang with friends. I would take them to the Stockyards in Fort Worth for delicious food and to see the rodeo. There are always food festivals taking place in downtown Dallas every month that we could check out! We could go to STK, a fancy steakhouse, and take cute pictures and eat. Depending on our flexibility, we could even drive down near Houston and visit the beaches! Texas has so many things to do and I don’t think it gets the credit it deserves.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my friend/mentor Ashley for helping me join the travel business. There were times that I doubted myself and she gave me the confidence to keep going with this business. In addition, I appreciate my husband for always supporting my dreams and never giving up on me. I want to thank everyone who’s trusted me enough to do business with me, refer me to others, and even partner with me. And to my parents and sister back in Ohio, I love you guys so much and will continue to make y’all proud! Lastly, I want to thank my best friend Kayla for pushing me to become a better version of myself and not be afraid to take risks.
