Meet Kayla Watters | Independent Hairstylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Watters and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Transparency. Being a hairstylist I had to learn to be raw and real with anyone that sits in my chair. Even if what I have to say is disappointing to my client. Last thing I want to do is over promise and not deliver. I preach to my clients hair health is my number one priority. That being said, I definitely attract those people who really care about their hair health. I’m also not afraid to tell someone, “ I’m not comfortable doing that.” When that is the case I typically refer them to someone I know can get the job done. Sure taking risks is all part of learning and growing, however, I would much rather take a class and mess up on a mannequin than on someone’s actual hair. Transparency allows for trust to be built as well as respect and I believe that is something my business has.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I never ever planned to be a hairstylist. It kind of just fell in my lap at the right place and time. As soon as I started school it felt so natural doing hair. I started at Panther City Salon in Fort Worth straight out of school as an independent hairstylist. Typically this would be something you work up to, however, I was up for the challenge. When I say I sent hundreds of people a message on Instagram a day asking them if they need their hair done, I mean it! I was able to build up pretty quickly which is such a blessing in itself. I take the time to really get to know my clients before I even see them to make sure they know what they are getting into. Everyone knows what to expect and how much the appointment costs before they see me. This in itself is where the trust truly begins. Once they are in my chair I of course give them their service, but I also take the time to educate them. I analyze their hair health and guide them in the direction that I think will benefit them most. I’m really big on non toxic hair products and I’ve just recently found my love for Young Living essential oils. Educating myself on these oils has allowed me to give my clients more at home DIY hair remedies to enhance their shampoos and conditioners. I’m currently working on my own non toxic hair products! Being behind the chair for a year and a half now I’ve really noticed common issues my clients have with their hair. I’m creating these products based on their needs. Let’s just say it’s going to be an incredible game changer in the hair industry.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Summer Moon is one of the BEST coffee shops Fort Worth has to offer. My all time favorite Vintage T-shirt shop 817 Vintage Hype! They have amazing vintage tees, jeans, shoes, and jackets! The Stockyards are full of rich history and I mean c’mon you have to go if you are in Fort Worth. Bass Performance Hall. They have amazing broadway shows and if you are in town you should see a show! The venue itself is an art piece. The Modern and Kimball Art Museums both beautiful and very different art museums that are a must see.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course MANY people have a place in my story. I’ll name a couple of the big ones! My Fiancé Triston, parents, siblings, family, Baldwin Beauty Schools in Austin, Urban Betty Salon in Austin, Nina and Tyler Fitzgerald, Panther City Salon in Fort Worth, Re:vive Salon in Wichita Falls, Taylor Skelton, and Melanie Sadler.
