Meet Katy Portillo | Dog Treat Dealer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katy Portillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katy, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Susie’s Snacks literally just started from reading the back of ingredient panels on store bought snacks and thinking to myself, “I would never eat this stuff, why am I feeding it to my dog?!” Thus, inspired Susie’s Snacks! All of our treats are made with human grade ingredients and most of the snacks are 6 ingredients or less.

What should our readers know about your business?
The road to where Susie’s Snacks today has definitely not been a straight and easy path. In fact, it’s been quite opposite. Through many curves and bumps in the road (some quite literal), I am proud to say that we are thriving and on course to have our best year yet. In the coming 6 months, we will actually be getting ready to double our retail space from just over 600 sq feet to OVER 1,200 sq feet and adding some very exciting things to our space. Through it all, if there’s one thing that I’ve learned is that with a little faith and a lot of encouragement, I can make it through anything.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well lucky for you, my best friend is actually planning a trip up to the DFW area soon and I’ve been busily finding us fun, cool things to do!
We are BIG craft beer fans, so any time she’s in town we definitely try to hit up a few local breweries. Some of our favorites include:
*Deep Ellum Brewing Company
*Denton County Brewing Company
*Rahr & Sons Brewing Company
We also love to explore and learn new things so some of the places I’d take her to hang out would be:
*Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit
*Perot Museum
*Fort Worth Stockyards
And then finally, she would most likely be drug out to some sort of market/ festival since that’s the other half of my business. So dependent on the weekend she’s here we would probably either be at the Denton Community Market, McKinney Farmers Market, Celina Friday Night Market, Lucas Farmers Market or the Krugerville Farmers Market.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been very blessed in my lifetime to have collected many mentors, but at the end of the day, I can honestly say that Susie’s Snacks would not be where it is today without the love and support of my mom. From day one, she helped in every aspect of the business. She helped create recipes, worked markets, delivered treats and so much more.
