We had the good fortune of connecting with Katy Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katy, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
It has evolved a lot over time especially once I became a mom and my priorities changed. I started my business as a way to be able to stay home with my kids while still using my brain. The tricky part was balancing all of it. When I started my business, I wanted to spend as much time as I could building my business. At the time, I was in social media marketing so I spent most of my time online. That led to a few experiences with burnout which is when my idea of balance shifted. I realized it wasn’t really about how much you worked or how hard you worked. It’s what you want from your business. That is going to look different for everyone.

Now my idea of balance is paying attention to what I enjoy doing in my business and leaving the rest. My offers have changed, my business has changed as I continue to strive for a flow of balance in life and business. So I regularly ask myself what I want to do in the moment. What is exciting to me right now? Balance is being able to do the things you enjoy doing without feeling like you are short changing one thing and that requires a hard look at priorities.

What should our readers know about your business?
Business is never easy! My business has changed many times over the past nearly 6 years. One of the things that sets me apart from others is my no BS approach. I don’t waste time or money because I’ve had it happen to me. When someone works with me, they become part of the Miller Social family.

I am most proud of where my business is today. When I think about where I started to where we are today, it’s pretty amazing to think of the evolution of offers. It started as a social media management company doing full management with dreams of becoming an agency. After a couple years of struggling to figure out how to blend social media and course development, it finally clicked. That’s when it felt right. The brand hasn’t changed though. I’ve always been dedicated to my clients. I’ve just grown more confident in my ability to deliver results.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that it is ok to change things in your business. It is ok to take away an offer or product if you don’t like it anymore. Many people are nervous to pivot in business but that is part of growth. I also think you need to trust your gut especially in this online space. We have a lot of noise coming in, find time to listen to your own voice.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would hang out at my house!

But if we did venture out:

we would go to an FC Dallas game if they were in season and/or the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Frisco

make a candle at Malibu Apothecary

hang out in Legacy West

go to Spa Habitat in Legacy West

grab coffee at Lemma Coffee Co

eat at Tulla Patisserie & Cafe, Simply French Kitchen, The Heritage Table, Chido’s Taco Lounge, Batch Bakery, Crush Taco

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My kids have been a big part of my story. I started my business to show them options and they have been my biggest cheerleaders.

Shannon Mckinstrie was one of my first mentors when I was a social media manager. She encouraged me and helped shape my business into what it is now as I shifted away from social media and into course development.
