We had the good fortune of connecting with Katelyn Poland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katelyn, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
Reading is not only a hobby for me, it is healing. Growing up you could often find me at the library or in my room reading stacks and stacks of books. My paternal grandmother would read to me a lot and it was our way of bonding. With her inspiration, I formed a love of books and reading from a young age. It always felt comforting to read stories, to learn, or just the accomplishment of finishing a book. I have a lot of books that have influenced me. My collection grows and I love the comfort of having books on my shelves. Some would say I have too many. I love different genres of books but my favorite would be self help/psychology/astrology books. I love to be able to understand myself and others more. Sometimes I love to take a break from reading to learn or heal and love to read poetry. Books that I have read recently that impacted me are Rupi Kaur’s poetry books. I love all her poetry, and have read all her publications, but Homebody has recently really resonated with me. I often reread her books over and over. I pick them up when I feel called to them. Last year I got to see her show live, where she read her poetry aloud. That was so amazing. Being able to see her speak her poetry and see the written words come alive. The impact her word and visions have on me is not feeling so alone. Her poetry describes the hard work of simply living – she often writes of mental health or resiliency. Her words inspire me. She often writes of heartbreak and love, but most importantly self love. Reading those words resonates deeply with me and it helps heal. Her book Homebody, means a lot to me. It inspired me to give back and pour into myself. The back of the book has the excerpt, “after feeling disconnected for so long, my mind and body are finally coming back to each other”. That is what reading her poetry felt like to me. Coming back home to myself and being able to read words that I hadn’t been able to express myself. It is that feeling of not feeling so alone – or realizing there is someone out there who has felt as deeply as I have. Her words have helped me give a voice to my own feelings. In the book she has a poem, “what a relief to discover that the aches I thought were mine alone are also felt by so many others”. In my business as a psychic medium and also being close to graduating with my Master’s degree in Youth Development and counseling – these words deeply resonate personally and professionally. So much of what I do for my clients is motivation from wanting to help others because of the things I have been through and those who have helped me. I know what it is like to need or desire help or just someone to listen and understand. Rupi Kaur’s words inspire me to keep making an impact in my work and personal life. To keep healing myself to keep healing others.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Since I was young, I have always known I could communicate with Spirit and those who have passed away, but I never honored those gifts. I didn’t always know how to use them or to channel the energy to interpret the messages I was receiving. I had been communicating with my own four grandparents who are passed away – seeing and interpreting the signs they were sending me- but did not realize I could channel for others. As my connections and relationships deepened with them, so did my gifts- and I soon began reading for others. I received my bachelor’s degree in Child, Adult, and Family Services, back in 2016, from Iowa State University. Now I currently am enrolled in my master’s program. I have a few semesters left and will graduate with a Master’s in Family and Consumer Sciences with an emphasis in Youth Development. Healing and helping others has always been a passion of mine. Helping others express and process their pain, grief, anger, depression, or more difficult emotions. So, in 2016 after graduation and certain life events that challenged my own emotions, I found myself turning to guidance from my ancestors again. I wanted to learn more about psychology, spirituality, and astrology. I spent the next few years learning to read tarot cards, working with mentors/coaches/psychics, and learning about my gifts. I started doing readings for friends, family, and others here or there – channeling and working on using my gifts. After a while, I decided it was time to trust Spirit fully and combine my skills to help others heal in a different way. In 2021 I took a leap of faith and left my “9-5” job in human services and started this business. As a psychic medium, I feel very humbled to be the interpreter and express what I am seeing/hearing/feeling from the client’s passed loved ones. The emotions are real and raw. My psychic mediumship channeling abilities and my literal education are meant to provide a healing space to help others manage and process just that- the real and raw emotions. I offer one on one mediumship sessions, over video chat, to channel your passed loved ones. I also offer Psychic Guidance sessions and read tarot cards to answer any questions about life, love, careers, etc. I offer a variety of other readings with specific intentions as well. It makes me excited to connect others to their passed loved ones. I have learned a lot of lessons along the way, but the biggest one is that our passed loved ones and ancestors really do want to communicate with us! What sets me apart is combining my psychic and mediumship abilities with my education and degrees. As a Psychic Medium, I feel very humbled to be able to channel and express what I am seeing/hearing/feeling from the client’s passed loved ones in sessions. The emotions are real and raw and are truly life changing. I am happy to provide a safe and healing space to be able to have people connect to their loved ones again. It makes me happy to help heal other’s Souls, the living and the dead. There is healing on both ends in my sessions- for the client and the passed loved ones giving the messages. It is a beautiful thing when we realize there is more to life, and death does not truly separate us from our loved ones!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite places in Dallas is Lockhart Smokehouse BBQ – the food is delicious. The ribs and jalapeno mac and cheese are my favorites! I can’t have a trip to Dallas without going there. It is located in the Bishop Arts District. I also love to stop at the local shops, other restaurants, and live music at some places. Other places I recommend right there in Bishop Arts District are an ice cream shop – MELT Ice Creams, a donut shop – The Salty, a pizza spot – Eno’s Pizza Tavern, and a chocolate shop – Dude, Sweet Chocolate. There are so many shops to explore down there!
A couple blocks – in walking distance – is one of my favorite crystal shops Luna Metaphysical. The staff there are so helpful and knowledgeable about the crystals. Whether you are a collector like me or have never bought a crystal, they can help you find something perfect!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course my ancestors deserve the biggest shout out! My paternal and maternal grandparents are passed and are my biggest sources of love, inspiration, and guidance. They are with me every step of the way and were my first connections to channeling Spirit. Without them, I would not have had the faith to open my business. They are involved in all my business decisions and truly show me first hand how our loved ones are right there still with us after death. Channeling and interpreting their signs are what led me to discovering my gifts and abilities. My four grandparents are my biggest guides but I also would like to credit all my honorable ancestors. They truly are with me always and have led me to share my gifts with others to connect them to their own passed loved ones. My business would not be possible without Spirit or my ancestor’s help.
