We had the good fortune of connecting with Katelyn Fisher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katelyn, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Organization has been key for me! Staying organized helps me stay on top of my work and be more reliable for clients. Another helpful habit that has helped me to succeed is to practice networking. Networking has been the key in order to get myself on set of different projects and involved in opportunities I wouldn’t have been involved with otherwise.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
With a huge passion for films and storytelling, I became interested in special effects makeup. I taught myself makeup skills early in high school and began to get gigs here and there. Through one of the makeup jobs I worked, I had the opportunity to do a little directing. I discovered I had a passion for that as well. Since then, I started dabbling more in directing, as well as other things in the film industry. I also have experience in production design and screenplay writing, all stemming from my first interest in makeup for film. Along the way, I’ve learned to try everything once. You may fall in love with it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite things about Dallas is the food. Places like Ellen’s, a delicious brunch spot, is a must. Another must in Dallas is a coffee run. One of my favorite coffee shops in Dallas, Magnolias Sous Le Pont, has a great atmosphere and beverages. For shopping and culture, we’d stop at K-town in Carrollton for sure. There are so many delicious restaurants and fun stores to explore.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Someone who has helped me grow as an artist has been Marielena Resendiz, the mentor of the Media Arts LLC program at the University of North Texas. While I was always passionate about special effects makeup, Marielena, as well as my peers in the organization, helped me grow my confidence and try new things. Because of this, I branched out and directed my first short film and am in production for another. She has taught me to speak up and share my opinion, without fear of what others think.
