We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Gurley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kat, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are uncomfortable, yet necessary! I find that when you focus primarily on worry of an unknown outcome, you tend to miss out on some of your greatest opportunities! The last year alone has proven that taking risks builds a greater confidence for myself and business; which in turn gives my consumers trust and loyalty to my brand! When you go outside the box/ dare to be different – you attract an audience that looks to conform to self rather than the masses, a parallel to SévWraps’ idea that we are all our own Queens who deserve to wear special Crowns.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As all things in life, there is no straight easy or difficult way to live in the success I am experiencing in present day. My educational credentials fall in the fields of Photography, Journalism and Foreign Language, but the art of individuality and creativity has always flown through my veins since childhood. Life has been my greatest teacher. I have always dreamed of taking my talents and promoting them in ways that encourage authenticity; and the gift I inherited from my mother was the perfect way to express that to the world. My Brand and story is a true reflection of the seed my parents planted; the successful, smart and sassy businesswoman you see today is the flower which bloomed from it. I am proud that through all adversity, I have pushed forward with the mindset that I will not quit and I can not fail. Sure, I have had experiences that unfolded in ways I did not necessarily appreciate, but in all – those same experiences gave me the motivation to change and evolve to acquire an even greater level of success that I have not even reached yet. I believe that taking my hardships and molding them into motivation has been a big factor in the greatness of my journey. To live, without fear, with faith and understanding that even if it doesn’t go your way, you can guide situations to do just that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my best friend to the best natural attractions I could find! I would most likely start with art museums, arboretums, lakes and nature preserves. We would definitely support every black owned restaurant we could find; one of my favorites being V-Eats Dallas, a vegan restaurant in Trinity Groves. I love going to parks/ lakes at night to stare gaze, but we would have to head downtown Deep Ellum! It has so much culture and diversity to experience! Afterward, we would HAVE to hit up Fuel City tacos for that good after-bar indulgence! Nothing soaks up good drinks better than street tacos. Nothing better than looking and smelling your best, while supporting small businesses in return!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My story would not have so many successful chapters and pages if it weren’t for my immediate support system. I am blessed immeasurably with a resilient foundation provided by my mother, Marilyn Gurley – the work ethic and push from my Brand Ambassador, Chyrese Q. Wright, – the stability and comfort in love from my siblings, and the referrals and shares from my supporters and followers.
