We had the good fortune of connecting with Karmin Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karmin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process was doing something that I LOVE and also being able to be there for my family. I was previously an administrator at the elementary school level, and doing that through the 2020 school year shook up my world. I was putting my all into the job, but forgetting that I needed to do the same for my children and husband at home. After much contemplating, prayer and wisdom from those around me I decided to leave education and stay home and start my own business. I knew what I wanted to do, but I also knew it was a risk and that I was starting from scratch. Although scary the silver lining was being able to take and pick up my kids from school EVERYDAY (something I was NEVER able to do when I worked) and the creative outlet I had in creating beautiful and edible charcuterie. I had experience in making charcuterie boards as I worked with my cousin in her business on weekends for the past two years, What I learned about firsthand through trial and error was the business side of things. Marketing, logos, business accounts, overhead cost and so much more had my dendrites on overdrive. It has been nothing short of a blessing to be able to show my children what you can do when you put your mind to it! Making my family proud as I navigate the world of being an entrepreneur is the icing on the cake!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Charcuterie is edible art that must be constantly practiced and improved upon. What sets me apart from others is my genuineness to creative something that the customer will love. I aim to be the best, so I study the best and give my all to each order no matter the size. I am most proud of the creative ideas I have in order to showcase food and am pretty excited to do my first wedding in the near future. One of my biggest challenges and lessons I had to overcome was pricing my charcuterie for exactly what it is worth. I have obtained hours of knowledge through the internet and taken courses that qualify me to do what I do. I want the world to know that when you order from Krafted By KC, you are getting an original masterpiece! You are getting the BEST.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would probably take my friend downtown off Oaklawn. There are so many cool and wonderful spots to visit. We could have drinks and dinner at XOXO to get some artistic cocktails and an unmatched vibe. Then the next day we would visit Chocolate Secrets to get some of the finest chocolate crafted in such creative ways or enjoy brunch. I would also take them to Kitchen & Kocktails as it is a beautiful black owned establishment with live music on weekends that will have you singing out loud. I would also take them to Klyde Warren park just to hang, grab a bite at the food trucks and maybe catch whatever entertainment they have that day. While in the area we would have to visit Yardbird Southern Table & Bar for some of the best fried chicken in Dallas. Lastly I would also take them to relax as Spa Castle to enjoy the amenities and a massage. There is so much to do in Dallas though, that this would just be a starting point.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My cousin Jessica, owner of Graze A Board, needs the biggest shout out in the world for not only introducing me to charcuterie, but being there every step of the way answering questions and cheering me on as I started my own business. She inspires, encourages and celebrates with me each time I win!
