We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Nivens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karla, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk taking is scary for me and that’s why I push myself to take calculated risks. It was a risk for me to release my first CD, then another risk to start a radio show, and yet another risk to write a book. Before I started on these projects, I hadn’t the slightest idea how to complete the entire project or the steps I should take toward completion of the projects.. But I had desire and drive. However, the most important thing I have is other people around me with knowledge and experience. I’ve realized that I don’t have to have ALL the answers as long as I have wonderful people working with me who have more experience than I do in certain areas. Other people allow me to take risks.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My goal is to influence culture for the good of the Kingdom of God. And I do this creatively through my music, my weekly radio show “Every Heart Every Woman” on 100.7 FM The WORD, and through my book “True Leaders with Heart”. But I think one of the things that sets me apart is the way I view my role in this world. Over the years, Ive grown into thinking of myself as a servant of others. When people engage with me through my music, radio show, or book, I want their life to be flooded with love. I hope people come away from my products with a better sense of who they are and they, in turn, will love others well.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to eat and I love to relax outside. My cousin recently came into town with her family from DC. We went to Legacy Food Hall twice during their visit. When you have extended family with various taste buds, Legacy Hall is the place to allow everyone to eat their favorite food, beverage, and dessert. We relaxed for hours at a big table outside on the patio. Lots of laughs and catching up! I also love the Dallas zoo. It holds so many memories for my family. My parents have a season pass and when the grandkids where younger, they took the kids to the zoo weekly. They allowed the kids to get a map and be in charge of navigating through visiting the animals. Now that all of the kids are teenagers, we all still enjoy visiting the zoo as a family. It’s incredible how the zoo has changed so much from when I was a kid and changes still are happening before my children’s eyes. I look forward to one day taking my grandchildren to the zoo for weekly visits!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My story would be drastically different without my family. My parents gave me the opportunity to be creative through music lessons, volunteering for others, opportunities to write shows or songs, and most importantly family discussions about our faith in Jesus Christ. I honestly feel like my childhood shaped me into the business woman I am today. My husband is the spring board that propels me forward. I describe our relationship as “power meets power”. Both of us are completely focused on each others success. We mutually want the other person to serve others to the best of our abilities. My husband and I know we are called to lead others to a relationship with Jesus Christ. We do this by loving people and being example of Christ’s love.
