We had the good fortune of connecting with Karina Doll Vasquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karina Doll, how do you think about risk?
I truly believe risks in a way is you dreaming but in real life! Like you have seen this vision in your head. You are supposed to feel scared! Growth will not happen without risk. Every dream starts with an idea, but it’s the action—the leap of faith—that turns it into reality. Without risk, I wouldn’t have my beautiful suite. I would be stuck in somewhere where it’s comfortable and someone else is responsible in getting me clients (commission stylist) not to knock it because it’s very much needed to climb the ladder but I would of just stayed at a place like that. Which as we know nobody is going to go hard for you as much as you would.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I heard the quote of whatever you do,do it with passion it was so simple yet so impactful for me. That’s exactly what I do I provide an experience not a hair appointment! I’m so proud of myself taking that big risk and switching career paths back in 2014. I had been in the medical field for 5 years and was going back to school to get my basics because becoming a nurse was “safe” and guaranteed job with health insurance, but I absolutely always hated school. Also it just wasn’t me, I loved makeup and long nails totally not nurse vibes. Let me just say I had an amazing phycology professor that woke me up in my career choice. Professor Ron, there was an assignment he gave us, based on “What do you love to do?” He told us if you love to play the guitar than that’s what you should be doing. Figuring out how to make money playing the guitar! Basically do what you love and learn how to make a living off that. My answer omg I sounded so ditzy I told myself-but I love beautiful things, all beautiful things!!! I love making things “prettier” I love curling my hair, I love makeup I love the glam. I looked up the best cosmetology schools in Dallas, signed up that day and got a job down the street weeks later to one of the best Dallas Salons with an amazing apprenticeship. I took that leap and put faith first and went all in ! I have learned so much along the way and met so many amazing people! Some becoming lifelong friends. We can always learn from each other from a new hair stylist to a senior stylist. It’s art , art has no limits-no rules. That’s what keeps me learning all the time.
I want the world to know that I do this with so much love, so much passion there is no plan b for me this is where I strive to keep going and keep growing. I will always make sure you feel heard. This has came with hard work, keeping head low but my goals HIGH. Always learning and remaining focused on the big picture, not the moment where it gets rough making you question your whole career choice. I’d like to believe I’m your little escape from the real world where you will leave feeling better than what you came in!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ok so I’m a little rusty as I love being home after having my baby almost two years ago but let’s see …Let’s do the touristy stuff for sure! The Dallas Museum has lots of IG picture moments Let’s go down town Dallas experience the food trucks at the popular park Klyde Warren, have some wine at The Reunion or better known as “The Ball”. I feel like night time is prime there! All the lights and buildings while your so high up there it just sets the mood to remember to DREAM BIG. Let’s catch the sunset at The Monarch-that place reminds me of my girl and I adjusting our schedules on Fridays to be at the bar top there watching the sunset from 49 floors up the building ! Oh it’s endless on the things to do. It would be more of what’s the vibes we feel for the day. I’m obsessed with flowers and plants we would definitely have to wake up early and go to The Arboretum- eat there and walk around drinking our wine looking at beautiful landscapes. On the more relaxing side I love my new area in The Colony and surrounding spots! We would have to do a vey much relaxed self love love type of day at Worldsprings it’s a spot with lots of different types of hot waters and some cold plunges with food and drinks, we would have to get some bubbles for the occasion of course. I’d have to take my friend to my gym and enjoy the club there, find a super cute local coffee shop like London Baker, go shopping for an outfit at Legacy West so we can look cute as we sip our beautiful martini to end our evening.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I tell myself daily when I’m walking up to my suite …WOW! it’s such a view walking into the building where I do hair. The wind hits my soul and I’m just at awe to see where I get to do what I love, the baby stylist me that survived the apprenticeship would be so proud !!! It was not easy, it definitely was not for the weak, but with passion with having a cleared vision you soaked in everything the program had to offer that was lead my a Boss woman Deanna Dipizio. Her salon was one of the top salons in Dallas for many many years. As my career evolved everything made much more sense on why and how she did things. She’s still in my head when I do things. “Lazy doesn’t work here” lol I am not done until I’m done! – Thank You D you have to be tough, have a purpose, a plan and let nothing or any outside opinions get in the way. Deanna was not for everyone and that’s ok I felt a little more special when she didn’t give up on me and would come in on her personal time to teach me a cut I was struggling with so bad. I had some mean people Q me if this is what I really wanted to do but D and my little village kept my head on. I remember her telling me “one day when you’re on stage, don’t forget about me” will Deanna I have not. Enjoy this moment, Thank you
