We had the good fortune of connecting with Kameron Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kameron, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I always knew I was an artist from the moment I would pick up a crayon and draw on the walls as a little kid. it was something that was just in me and as I gotten older, I would enjoy spending my time isolating myself from the world drawing or painting anything id seen somewhere that inspired me. for hours, replicating that on paper or canvas really left room to harness my skills and it became apparent how much creating was much more than just a hobby for me it was my passion. from doodling on class assignments in high school to interacting with large scale art at museums, I became fascinated by my relationship with art knowing I too had the ability to create by my own hands’ masterpieces.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
my work encapsulates figurative portraiture that conveys emotion through recognizing the self-relation of my black culture. what’s sets me apart from others is the vivid concepts I create that tell a unique story. in the exploration of my work, heightened forms of color, light, and texture makes the establishment of my work all around refined, critical, and explosive. I’m proud in my development as a great artist which daily I’m constantly learning to love the process of my growth and being patient while inspired by my perspective of life. I’ve gotten this far by the grace of God and just by producing work in the studio as well as researching what’s out there and how I’m able the opportunity to show my work to my art loving community. of course, things are never that easy or simple but through much insane belief of faith in myself while building tough skin I’ve become resilient enough to handle whatever life throws my way. the biggest lesson I’ve learned was to always stay true to yourself as an artist to making great works so whatever idea you have just do it and never put the paintbrush down for anything or anyone. the biggest thing I want the world to know about Kameron walker is that… I’m the next for this century of contemporary artist.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
the best place to visit in my opinion is a good night in downtown Fort Worth on 4th St at the scat jazz lounge if you love the city lights at night and are a night owl then you’ll love live music performances from jazz musicians in a dimmed nightclub setting that’s meant to help you relax and unwind. I go there often because of my love for jazz music when I’m not in the studio. but if I want to hang with artist in my community, I go down dragon st in Dallas to check any current exhibitions along the strip of art galleries there and lastly for a bite to eat ill explore any local Mexican restaurant that serves the best quesadillas and burritos.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
well first, I believe the best support system started at home. I was fortunate enough to have a family that recognized my talents early on and always encouraged me to stick with it no matter what. As well as my art mentor Michael E Johnson who I nickname “OG Johnson” nurtured my tunnel vison guiding my steps to see what the art world had to offer me. his encouragement was so impactful to my soul he put all his beliefs in what I was meant to be in me. to Kim Phan Nguyen, and Lauren child’s I thank for the Opportunity to originate as an intern at the fort works art gallery in downtown Fort Worth. whereas Kim recognized my ambitions and dreams, Lauren sat me down to teach me up close and personal the art market and how it functions. lasty want to shoutout Msanii house fine art, Latino cultural center, bath house cultural center, and the Dallas art museum for recognizing my talents allowing me to display my artwork to art lovers in my Dallas community.
