We had the good fortune of connecting with K J Holland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi K J, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my business developed when I was working for another company. I was doing sales, consultations, templating, and installations. Then I heard someone say “You must be willing to do today the things that others will not do in order to have tomorrow the things that others will not have.” I realized that I had it in me all along. That started me on my journey building Jae Woodwork not just into another construction business but a Relational Brand.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the owner of Jae Woodwork and building a business or a brand requires a focus like no other. I began to realize that having goals and reaching towards them not only sets you apart from some it will alienate you from some considered to be closest to you. You really begin to come into who you are in stepping out on faith making the decision to run a business of your own. Learning to navigate staffing, payroll/financial issues, marketing, and several other structural points of business has been instrumental in the growth of Jae Woodwork. Meaning I have chosen to learn every aspect of my business structure rather than just pay someone to do a particular job. This has not only allowed me to know what is going on in my business but it has given me a greater perspective. What has set us apart from others is the fact that we are a “relationship” centered company. We really build relationships with our clients during several phases of their projects. Life happens and when it does sometimes you just can’t go on with “business as usual”. So we have made it a practice to see our clients as individuals. Having understanding will take you a long way, a lesson I have learned from both of my Grandfathers. We have set standards for ourselves as a business so that others do not have to set the standard for us. We strive to provide quality in every aspect. We not only are a construction company, we are also a design and consulting firm. New Vision New Reality is what we bring to the table for our clients. You have a vision we will make it a reality.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you want to have the time of your life in the D/FW area there are several places that are a must! For a great breakfast The Dalrock Diner in Rowlett is the place. For shopping, Union Station in Fort Worth is the hottest new spot for designer fits. After that Klyde Warren Park in Dallas is where you go to relax and meet new people and get acquainted with Dallas lifestyle. If the weather changes gears ,like it does in Texas, you could hop over to the TBAAL, The Black Academy of Arts and Letters and catch a show. Then Dinner at Smokey John’s. Thats Day 1! The rest of the week will include The Arlington Improv for some great comedy, Bar Louie in Arlington for some live music from the 2ndIInoneband and an array of places to eat.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my wife, who is the Co-Owner of Jae Woodwork. She has been not only a great partner in business but also my number one supporter. I would also like to shoutout the Way Back Organization, especially Katie Milholland, who was instrumental in helping me get grants for tools of my trade and helping me form my business model.
Last but not least, I would like to give a shoutout to my Grandfather Jerry Jacob Senior and my Father Jerry Jacob Jr. for their unwavering advice in entrepreneurship and business relations. Not to mention their genes in creativity and problem-solving skills.
