Meet K.B. Roscoe | Artist & Author/Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with K.B. Roscoe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi K.B., we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk hasn’t necessarily been a thought that’s crossed my mind when pursuing the goals I’ve had for myself creatively. Although there is inherent risk in pursuing a goal, it is rather more risky that I’m learning how to do things as I go rather than knowing everything I can before I jump in. Sometimes my projects don’t work. The beauty behind having multiple creative projects is you learn to apply the lessons from the failures to your next project. Risk is a side effect to doing something new and its reward is always what you learn along the way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m just getting started! I paint, illustrate, make leather goods, and do pyrographic art on bone as well as leather, and occasionally photography. I’ve been working on a children’s book called Birdy and Odd for years and it’s finally available on Kindle/Amazon digitally. I’m still making edits to the paper back version which I will be releasing on Amazon books at the end of August. I will be arranging book reading shortly there after. I’m extremely proud of this book because the learning curve and time commitment are unlike anything else I’ve ever attempted. It’s been a dream I’ve had for a long time to release a kids book, a bit of a bucket list item really. I’m doing all of this while pursuing my master’s in behavior analysis (another thing on my bucket list). I’ve had tremendous support from my family. There’s been a lot we’ve been through together and without that support none of us would be where we are now. I’ve learned that what you’re meant to do will find you as long as you’re seeking to learn along the way. I want the world to know that it’s just the beginning, there will be more books, more paintings, more exploring. I’d love y’all to tune in for the progress. I’m going to be featured at the Oak Cliff Assembly art walk in September, come see me. I’m starting a sticker business as well . I’m always available for inquiries about commissions so don’t be afraid to ask!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend we’re coming to visit I’d take them to the arboretum for the tulips. I’d take them on hikes to see the wildflowers. Then I’d make sure that we visit outdoors markets to see all the beautifully creative local artists and makers. And finally we’d go to as many concerts as our schedule allows for! I love Billy Bob’s Texas as a venue, I also love the DMA and all the historical and contemporary art we have access to here!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve been extremely impressed by the community stewardship and outreach by some of the creative community and market groups in Denton, Tx. Specifically Every Witch Way Denton and Denton Art and Performance Collab (dapc940). They provide opportunities for creatives to get there artwork out there to people who appreciate it. They also make an effort to provide artists just getting started with a platform. Where other group’s focus on artists with an established audience in order to promote and grow their market. DAPC 940 is a nonprofit market which donates their proceeds to causes around Denton such as groups that serve the LGBTQIA+ community in Denton. And Every Witch Way Denton is a beautiful market that provides a home for the magical small business of Denton as well as more eclectic businesses that make art and goods from atypical materials.
