We had the good fortune of connecting with Julisa Crowder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julisa, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks has never really been an issue for me until going into this business venture because in order for me to be a nail tech/hairstylist, I have to invest in supplies so I’m using the money I make at my 9-5 to fund my business and a fear I had when I first thought of the business is “what if I get no clients? I’m spending thousands of dollars on material I might not even use” and I realized that’s a common fear business owners have. Not making a return on your investment is scary but successful business owners made the leap anyway so why shouldn’t I?

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So right now, I specialize in acrylic nails, hair color, and textured hair in general but there’s so much I want to do in the beauty industry, I plan to expand my services in the future. I definitely wouldn’t say this was an easy journey, I wanted to quit multiple times while I was in school. I felt like I wasn’t learning enough of what I wanted to specialize in and I was still working a full time job. I’d work 12a-8a and then go to school for 3 1/2 hours and repeat that Monday-Friday. I also was posting Tik Tok videos every now and then. Now I’m a licensed cosmetologist but I’m still not where I want to be, I want to build more clientele and I feel like the only way for me to do that be more consistent with posting my work online whether it gets views or not. I’m still working on that. I want the world to know that this brand didn’t just grow overnight. On social media, we only see the good parts of being a business owner, cars, designer clothes, luxury homes and apartments, we rarely see the work that’s put in, the struggles that business owners go through. I’m currently in the grinding stage and hope to overcome it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Deep Ellum/Downtown. I grew up in Old East Dallas but never got to explore the area until I was a college student, there’s so many nice restaurants in Dallas like Ellen’s on Ross Ave, my favorite brunch spot. They have the best mimosas or NIWA Japanese BBQ in Deep Ellum. It is a hibachi style restaurant where you’re given the food already seasoned and you cook it yourself in your own personal grill.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my phase 1 cosmetology teacher Ms. Mimi Hawkins for giving me real, raw advice about life and how the beauty industry is. As I moved up the phases in school, the teachers pushed me to work under someone else in a salon and that it wouldn’t be wise to work for myself right out of school. They didn’t really push entrepreneurship there but Ms.Mimi did, she worked for herself once she got her license and I figured if she could do it, why can’t I?
