We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Doyle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
You know how some people advise playing it safe is the best bet?  This maxim is usually offered as a cautionary tale because some people say the best laid plans often go awry.  Well, that’s never really been a worry for me. “Doing” keeps my fear at bay. In every creative process one can only hope for the unknowns to appear because that’s where the real magic happens.  Sometimes you have to get out of your own way.  When I’m inspired, it gets me thinking. I form a clear vision. I do my research. I collaborate, and I’m off. I may take detours. I may encounter roadblocks. But when I am passionate I just keep going. Adjust the plans. Forge new paths. For me it’s important that I find a way to blend my creative pursuits with my entrepreneurial instincts. The balance of art and commerce can be a tango or a waltz. Sometimes the ability to pivot is the best move to make. While no true challenge is ever easy, it’s fun to dream and take steps to make things happen. I believe successful creatives blend life experience with good instincts to create a space worth celebrating. While it’s a lot of risk taking, excitement paired with anxiety, it must include FUN or I’m out.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been in almost every aspect of the music business for a very long time and that’s given me the confidence, the experience, and now the freedom to gamble on any project for which I feel passion. I have to say, embracing my community and finding inspiration in my own backyard has been the key.

At age 20, I knew the four year university route was not for me. So I left, and my real education began right here in Dallas, Texas. I dove headfirst into the music scene. I took a job at Deep Ellum Cafe and couldn’t wait for my shift to end, so I could hop the fence at Club Dada and experience live music. It didn’t matter who was playing! Soon after, my then boyfriend, now husband, Tim and I founded the band Tripping Daisy and cue my first resume entry: the role of manager/merchandiser/roadie…and everything under the house lights! Fast forward ten years and a few kids later, Tim and I founded The Polyphonic Spree. I continued to wear many hats, but I also added the roles of  mother and performer to build my resume. 😀

Collaborating with Tim and Chris Penn led to Good Records opening in 2000. This next endeavor began with the realization that our neighborhood could benefit from a good ‘ole mom and pop record store. From that the Good Umbrella evolved and our brand was launched.

For me the word good encapsulates all that is right in the world. This brings us to Lounge HERE where the vision was clear: create a unique, thoughtful destination in East Dallas with good food, good drinks, and good people. We HERE, y’all. We HERE. C’mon.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them?
Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Hands down- East Dallas. You can do all the things on Garland Road!

Up early? Begin your stay catching the sunrise at White Rock Lake with some delicious coffee from LDU right down the street.

Then pop into Good Records next to Lounge Here – pick up your favorite vinyl and browse for hours. About Lounge Here- ready to kick back with a nice cocktail and a Southern inspired cuisine with a twist? Here is the place.

Need a bit of self-care during your stay? Next door. Super Yoga Palace- Jessica Jordan is always evolving where keeping the mind, body and spirit stays fresh in approach!

Feeling adventurous? Better Half Pop Up- Jennie Kelley and Brandon Moore- you can always count on them to pop up somewhere cool with their Detroit style pizza and then some!

Need a taco? My personal fave- Resident Taqueria. Amy and Andrew Savoie offer up some of the best in town!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Mucho shout out to my family and friends for life who always support my creative visions both practical and seemingly nonsensical! Thankfully, this allows me the freedom to be me.
