We had the good fortune of connecting with Judy Jamieson-Goff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Judy, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
In retail, you have to pay for everything up front and there are no returns. Many people think that we are on consignment, where the companies give us merchandise and we return what does not sale. Unfortunately, that is not the case. In Dance Retail, we have minimums we have to meet. And sometimes the everyday customer will get better offers than we do. Though we do get items for wholesale prices, we have to buy in bulk, meet a certain dollar amount, pay for shipping, etc. And sometimes the wholesale price is not always 50% off. As a brick and mortar store, we have overhead cost of opening the store; electricity, phone / internet, taxes, employee salaries, etc. Plus, we do advertising to try to reach dance studios and the public. So, while we buy wholesale, it can be a struggle for small businesses to make any headway, money wise. We believe that you must have a passion for your industry and for people, and not go into a small business for the money. We love what we do. Being in business for 50 years, same family and the same location, we know that passion for our craft and watching generations of customers, is what drives us and our success.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Mrs. June Jamieson started June’s Dancewear 50 years ago in the original house she raised her five children. Mrs. Judy, one of Mrs. June’s daughters, has been with the store from the start. In the beginning years, Mrs. Judy taught science for AISD TX, and helped her mom after school and on the weekends. She left teaching in 1982 to work full time at June’s. Mrs. Judy now owns and manages June’s Dancewear. Though Mrs. June passed 2 years ago, her dream of keeping her dance business still flourishes. At June’s, we care about our customers and love watching them grow throughout the generations. Providing our customers with Quality Dancewear and Dance Shoes is a goal that will continue through the coming years.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Arlington is a hub for arts and sports. We have the Dallas Cowboy Stadium, Texas Rangers Stadium, Six Flags Over Texas, and a ton of restaurants all less than a few miles from our store.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to thank all those who shop local and small businesses. Without their help, we would not be able to celebrate 50yrs of business.
