We had the good fortune of connecting with Joya-Bella Milani Hinds and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joya-Bella Milani, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Sometimes in life you are met with challenges and circumstances that are beyond your control. That is when you have to take a moment and reassess what is important to you. In an instance, it can all be lost. So you have to slow down and ask yourself, “why am I doing this? Who is this for?” Ultimately you would be able to make the decision of continuing to move forward, or staying stuck where you are. That treacherous feeling of being stuck is enough to keep me going forward.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Through my passion for filming and videos I created a vlog series on youtube which features some of my favorite moments and friends in my life. My goal is to document the journey of starting my business from the beginning. Currently I am working on developing my own clothing brand. I eventually want to grow into a non-profit organization to support youth that struggle with mental illness. Growing up, it was a major part of my struggle, and I often suffered from anxiety, and other intense feelings. My outlet came from me writing music and singing and lead to me developing my affinity for music and fashion. My mother always had books of her drawings of clothing and designs. I found platforms like Depop and Poshmark and began selling pretty much all of my clothing. This allowed for me to use social media as a platform to express myself, and make money to invest into starting my own business. I began to create content and getting more into my own personal interest and style. I had to block out the noise of what everyone else was thinking or saying. I feel like many people did not understand why I as a girl who left the Big Apple in pursuit of her new life, had to decide how she was going to handle her own destiny. Through me being in a tough situation I had to make some very life changing decisions. This led me to begin my business with Airbnb and renting out my property for the first time. Being a business owner is very challenging and it does not come with a manual on how to do everything. Everyone has their own experience and I am learning. Although ultimately, what I love to do was worth the risk and I have to grow and invest my time into my own dreams. I started connecting with people through networking and traveling. I always knew that I wanted to live a life of comfort and see my family happy. This inspired me to become a hustler, and I truly feel that there is no job description that accurately describes what a day in my life actually consists of. I love the spontaneity of living freely and being productive. Because I value education, I always dedicate some time throughout my day to learning. Planning and strategizing for success while also being realistic and humbled by the universe. Expressing gratitude and showing appreciation for the things that I love has become a major part of my work. I realized that I have to find my purpose. I hope one day that I can give back to others and heal the world with my music.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If the girls are in town then we’re definitely going to Spire. That’s where it’s at right now. I feel like Houston is a very large city where you can run into anybody, so you always want to be out and make sure you look good too. The food at prospect Park is super good! Kamp is good for its appetizers and the hookah. The wings are cheap there too. I think that taste bar for brunch is a classic on Sunday Funday.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my family because they are the ones that keep me going. It’s about being a team and working together. Sometimes I am not strong in one area and they are always there to pick up where I fall short. Vice versa, I feel like we all depend on each other and couldn’t do it without one another. Another shout out to my mentors and all the people that believed in me. It is so easy to put your head down and give up. I also shout out all the people that discouraged me to keep going, and doubted my success. I hope and pray that all my accomplishments speak for themselves, and I don’t have to prove my worth to anyone. Ultimately, I found success by believing in myself, trusting my instincts, and following my heart.
