We had the good fortune of connecting with JoVan Haney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JoVan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Being able to share my talents with those who were looking to enter into the industry. I hoped that if they saw how happy and joyous being a Nail Tech made me, they would want the same for themselves. Which is where Beyond Basic Nail Academy started.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I would’ve never thought I would be considered a “creative” or “artist.” I just love doing nails. I believe that is why I have become so artist over the last 2-3 years. I’ve allowed myself to be free mentally and it showing through my work. I am proud that I love what I do! I started my nail journey in 1996 and didn’t think that it would ever be my life, career, passion. I also believed, that if I didn’t open and then close my nail school. I wouldn’t have found that feeling again. It wasn’t easy to start doing nails again in 2015, because I had no choice. I had to earn a living until the school started to turn a profit. But when I grew my clientele, and started feeling the positive effects of those relationships, I knew that I had to make it work.
I’ve learned that “you are your own artist.” Meaning, don’t try and copy anyone’s style, create your lane, and ride your OWN lane.
I’m an ambitious, dope Creative Artist! I am excited for the next chapters of my story and and I want the world to see it!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve only been in Dallas since January, but I found my favorite sushi spot, Sushi Box. I would give Pangea a try, I heard it’s great food and ambiance. There’s a bike path that goes to the lake that we would hit, I love riding my bicycle.
And that’s all I got! I’m still learning the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom and dad have provided the most support. Although they have their ideals and don’t always agree, they knew what would give me the most satisfaction and happiness. Joe & Angela are the reason I am JoVan.
