Meet Joshua Hockett | Travel food & drink writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Hockett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Since I got married in April 2022, my work/life balance has had to shift a good deal to accommodate the needs of my wife and 8-year-old son. I value my family time and enjoy keeping them as a priority. I have had to better plan time for my own business work, my sport, and my day job. I don’t do anything halfway so its all or nothing for me. I then need to schedule time and days of the week to give full focus and attention to those areas of my life to assure I am doing quality work and spending quality time with my loved ones. Prior to my engagement and marriage, the only thing I had to worry about was me and my own life, my own job, and my own needs. This is no longer the case and I have had to adjust to make things work. I am still working to maximize the balance but I have it down pretty good so far.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am actually a full-time strength and conditioning coach and performance nutritionist by day. I have done this for 16 years now. I have an advanced degree in exercise science and several certifications in my field as well. Travel writing and blogging on the topics of food and wine and beer is something I took up in 2012 for fun, nothing more. It evolved fast and took me on a side-track journey to where I am now. Owning my own LLC and blog page and social media pages to capture my travels and tell stories to the world about the most amazing places to dine out and drink well. I have lived in 5 states, 2 countries, and 7 cities in 11 years since 2010 so I have been blessed with the chance to see some truly amazing places and meet some spectacular people. I continue to keep my day job working as a military firefighter strength and conditioning coach/nutritionist while doing my blogging and writing and traveling on the side. It can get to be a lot of work and juggling at times but I manage it pretty well for the most part.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would hit up several local spots in my hometown where I live now in San Angelo Texas. Craft beer at SoCo Taproom, wine at Invino Veritas wine bar, a great steak dinner at Western Sky Steakhouse, lunch at PV Deli sandwich shop, and breakfast at the old school 50s style diner known as Roxie’s. No stay here is complete without a stop on the famous Chicken Farm Art Center, the Concho Riverwalk downtown, or the Red Arroyo Trail. I also love the State Park we have in town as well, well worth a visit by all. Lastly, a sweet ending at The Latest Scoop ice cream parlor downtown to savor the best scratch-made super-premium ice cream you can find.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I guess I would have to thank my wife for giving me the flexibility to pursue my passion and fascination with travel, dining out, craft beer, and good wine. I am an extrovert and hustler. My wife not as much. So I know it takes some effort on her part to keep up with me on my adventures. Even so, she is my true partner in crime when we go out on such travel adventures. She is with me shoulder to shoulder in the places I do, the people I meet, things we eat and drink. I feel she enjoys the outcome as much as me even if it takes time, effort, and planning to do these things.
I also have to thank the many great people I meet on my trips and visits. The owners, chefs, pitmasters, brewmasters, cooks, etc. All of them make my visits possible by working with me to showcase their business, products, and stories in a way that intrigues my readers and locals alike. Without the people behind the places I visit, nothing magical really happens.
