Meet Josh Alballero | Founder & Startup Mentor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Alballero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I’ve always loved working. Even at a young age, I preferred working over going to school. I believe hard work brings you success. However, over time, I have seen the importance of also focusing on self and family, especially with my kids. With kids, my priorities shifted. It pushed me to learn how to get more done in less time (working smarter, not harder) and in the process I have learned that I can get more done working less hours than I do working more hours.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
IOOGO is a tax and accounting software and services company. Our proprietary technology allows individuals and small businesses to offload their books, taxes, accounting, budgeting, audits, R&D Tax Credit, and CFO services to the IOOGO tax and accounting professionals.
Our business model sets us apart from others. In the accounting world, you usually have one of two extremes:
1. Full AI accounting – prone to mistakes, doesn’t allow for individualized support, can’t do everything (e.g., IRS communications)
2. Traditional CPA – lacks technology, longer turnarounds, higher costs
We are the best of the two worlds. We use technology in-house to support the operations of our professionals, allowing them more time to focus on the personalized support required for our clients.
We have made a lot of great strides and proven our business model, but it wasn’t easy. It required a lot of discernment to know when to take the advice from other successful entrepreneurs and when to know that wasn’t right for us. And sometimes we got it wrong, but learned from those mistakes and course-corrected quickly.
I understand the struggles of a startup because I was there once and have since worked with hundreds of other startup founders to help them overcome their challenges and get on the right path to success and profitability.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many fun things to do in the DFW metroplex. If my best friend was visiting for the week, I would make sure to introduce them to the history, culture, city life, and a little bit of country that can all be found in Dallas/Fort Worth. – Dealey Plaza – the infamous spot where JFK was shot
– Dallas Arboretum – great spot in the evenings if the weather is nice and there is live music scheduled
– Klyde Warren Park – Who doesn’t want to walk around a park in the middle of the city while drinking a beer?
– Eating/Drinking – Deep Ellum – so many bars and restaurants (including Pecan Lodge, great for BBQ) in a walkable area. Also great for downtown views.
– Fort Worth – totally different vibe than Dallas and an opportunity to show the more traditional side of TX.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friend, Monica Osorio, has been one of my biggest cheerleaders. She is a Latina business owners who understands the challenges of starting your own business. She believes in me and the business so much that she has personally invested into it and tells everyone she can to invest into it, even when I tell her not to. 🙂
