Meet Jose Serrato | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jose Serrato and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jose, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
A big lesson I’ve learned over the years is to ignore all the noise that may be around you. This could be both negative or positive noise. Focusing on myself and the work I’m doing rather than looking around at whatever else others are doing has helped me from being discouraged and continue on my path at my pace. Although social media is a major tool in business, I try to avoid obsessing over it. We all would love thousands of followers that engage and share your content, but I don’t feel that measures your success as we all have different goals. Comparing yourself to other creators is the easiest way to feel doubt in what you’re doing. I have a small group of people that I can rely on to be straight up with me and tell me what they think about my work. It’s the way I keep my sanity while trying to build a business.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started playing with photography years and years ago when I would go see my friend’s band play around town. I bought my first Nikon and I started to learn how to photograph live music. I never expected to do much more than that as it was just something fun for me. This later led to photographing touring bands in bigger venues. I had the opportunity to photograph some of the biggest artists in the world. I started to get hired by bands and venues to cover their shows. That then led to taking portraits. I bought a drone and took a sharp turn to shooting projects for a few pool companies in DFW. These were not your typical pools though. These were massive projects in the 6 figure price range. That work was seen by others that led to working with high end landscapers and photographing luxury homes. I recently picked up capturing 3D tours for real estate as well. I’m continuing to learn more as I’m seeing my business grow. Video is the next challenge that I hope to build.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A trip to the Fort Worth Cultural District is a must to visit the museums. Grab a smash burger from Gustos. Breakfast needs to happen at Esperanza’s, Vickery Cafe or Blue Mound Cafe. Don’t forget the pan dulce at Esperanza’s. A Rangers game if it’s baseball season is a must for me. Grab a coffee at Casa Azul. A slice at Nizza Pizza or Serious Pizza. I suppose if it’s your first time in the Fort, a visit to Hell’s Half Acre. Others call it the Stockyards. Nightlife on Magnolia St or South Main. Catch live music at The Cicada.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is one specific person that has helped me keep my head from spinning out of control. The many times I wanted to quit, she helped me push myself to keep going. The endless amount of support over the years that gave me the confidence to try different types of photography has helped me to continuously leave my comfort zone that has led me to expand my portfolio and build my clientele. Thank you, S.L.
